Default Re: View after 10 games

Fantastic start to the season. Keep playing at this level and the playoffs look highly likely. What follows are comments relating to why I can't predict a top three finish yet.

The defence is doing great, but all teams are creating very dangerous chances against us. Its most likely down to weaker support to the fullbacks than last year. The compromise looks worth making, but Roberts/Carrington/Jennings would have to be Championship level defenders to guarantee we keep up the level of clean sheets we've been lucky to get so far.

You can't be confident of success with a luxury player in the starting line up. JMD has fantastic ability, but it looks like we won't get a fantastic achievement every game (He's not Ronaldo). You got the same dilemma with Cheesy and with Vose.

Ricketts is favouring partial squad rotation over a settled side. I'm reserving judgement on whether this is working for us, It might do as we get to the end of the season. You can see our opposition being knackered if they lost their stars (Rowe at Fylde, Rooney at Salford) whereas we are better covered. Its possible we've already lost points due to the rotation plan.

I feel guilty saying it, but my view of making us a better team means cutting back on the attractive football. I'd play Pyke, Beavon and Holroyd ahead of Maquire-Drew and my only squad rotation would be swopping Ruthers and Summerfield (as they've got the most knackering role). I think those changes would nudge us towards top three material.

My son was masot recently so we were allowed in the dressing room. A notice on the wall showed the points target for the first 10 games...18 points. So we have achieved that.

JMD compared to Cheesy - personally I would hang up my boots

My 7.5 was for performance/entertainment, the 21 out of 30 was the stats

Cant quite get to the 8.5 of yours but compared to last season which was around 4/10 then 7.5 is almost double.

A solid stat but could we do better.
Some patterns emerging.
Away form seems to be better in terms of 'results' than home form.
Hardly conceding despite changes to the back four.
However, I am concerned we are not scoring frequently enough.
The likes of Big Mike who will have started on a rush of adrenalin have now settled into a regular standard of play - all seems to rest on his shoulders as the out and out striker - goals have dried up for him after an initial burst - he is showing signs of frustration and getting substituted around the 60 minute mark - not necessarily because his play is terribly poor but because he is on a yellow and not risked to take a second one.
Points gained away from home have come against - shall we say teams who have not started well and are in the lower part of the league placings at present.
Home games has included opposition that is more fancied to do well - Fylde and Halifax have restricted us to a single point and we have failed to score against either.
3 home games have been drawn and 6 points lost - it needs to be better.

Looking ahead to the next month I feel will give us a better measure of where we are up to.

Regardless of Ebbsfleet being our visitors next week we have :

Both Sutton United & Harrogate Town away
Barnet at home.

These are the type of fixtures we need to take good points from - teams that will be competing for a play off place or more.

Only time will tell.

Assuming all of our players are fit and raring to go what would be your 1st 11 assuming we still haven't seen Hinds yet and especially to take on the likes of Harrogate, Barnet & Sutton

Lainton Dibble

Carrington, Roberts, Pearson, Tharme, Manny, Lawlor, Jennings,
Burgess, Walker, Akil, Summerfield, Young, Rutherford, Deverdics, L Smith
MFT Beavon, JMD, Pyke, Hinds, Holroyd

How many points has Holroyd won us this season? All he seems to do is slow play down, shadow of the player he was last season

Given the form of the others - MFT, Pike, Beavon, JMD then Holroyd is going to struggle for many minutes anyway. When it comes to Jan and improving the team/squad it will be an interesting problem for Sam
