The decisions to ‘lose’ the reserves and downsize the youth set-up were taken prior to SDR’s arrival by the 2 previous managers and the Board, with the intention of directing all available cash at promotion. That ‘punt’ has so far not worked, but there are signs that it might work this season. However, we are unlikely to know until the final whistle of the final game is blown. Mills’ managership was a disaster both on and off the field. Ultimately, the Board is responsible for managing the manager’s performance and results, not for managing the footballing side of the club. That is why professionals are employed to do so. Some succeed, most are average, whilst some are just incompetent. I fully support SDR’s decision to bring in better players via the loan system, simply because we couldn’t afford to either sign or pay the full salaries of those quality players. One could argue that he has signed 2 too many, but that seems rather trivial in the grand scheme of things. Looking forward, I am unsure whether it is feasible for us to have a reserve team - I have no doubt it would be highly desirable - or an extensive youth set-up. Tharme seems to be the only one likely to make an impact, but SDR is managing his exposure quite closely. In summary, our current set-up may be imperfect - and we certainly need to bring in more, better-quality players if we are to succeed - but I fail to see what else the Board could realistically do, other than finding a sponsor willing to support our youth set-up for a minimum of 5 years. Would be genuinely interested to read your suggestions for improving the club. After all, that’s what we all want, one way or another.

Though I would rather our first team was competitive than have a reserve team top of the Central Laegue, or whatever it is called nowadays. Lots of things have changed since we’ve ben down here, mainly as a result of cutting our cloth. |

How do you know that Ricketts has been “left to it”? How do you know he “reports to no-one?” Removing the reserves may be part of a plan to get us out of this league...upwards? By concentrating effort and finance on the first (and for the moment) only team. Why can’t we have more loanees than are allowed to play on a given Saturday? Injuries or strength in depth perhaps? How do you know the loanees are “kicking around doing nothing?” How do you know that Ricketts hasn’t “justified why he’s doing it?” Isn’t it right that the goal of the Club, the Board, the Manager and the fans be that we go all out for promotion? It is certainly my one and only goal for this Football Club, within a sustainable financial framework, of course. To claim that Ricketts does what he likes, based on things that may have happened historically with some other Managers, and expect thinking people to just nod in agreement is both arrogant and simplistic in equal measure. |

Re: Freddie Hinds
I understand the argument that our quota of loan players has been taken up each week, but surely space could be found in one game to give this lad a run out? If Bristol City fans think he is not far short of a first team place in a Championship team, there has to be some potential there.
If he never plays we will never know, and as the last two home performances have not really been earth shattering experiences as far as forward play and goal scoring opportunities go, why not give him a run out and lets see. |
