Noticed that a lot drink bottled cider in 1864 and Bamfords!

Visitors to a pub would have some significant confidence that with the products offered for sale and associated equipment in use on a day to day basis then things should run smoothly.

However what happens to beer that is sold from the cask via the bumps and then left in mothballs for perhaps the next 14 days ? (if this happens). It's almost like using a car on a daily basis - better than firing it up once a fortnight and hoping it works.
Think the Centenary Club would see a constant turn over with student use but what happens in other parts of the stadium ?

You can perhaps understand the use of bottled drinks as a preferred option given our overall circumstances.

As I drive to and from every game I have never indulged in the draught beer on offer, but would be surprised if it is cask on offer as cask ale, once tapped, even kept in the best of cellar conditions will only be good for up to 72 hours or so before the beer will become unpalatable. I would imagine that the beer on offer is keg, which as a result of no oxygen getting near the beer, will last for a considerably longer period.

But what about the pipework between the keg and the pump ? - I do not profess to know how it works but is it prudent to draw beer from a keg and then leave the remainder from say 6th October (Havant & Waterlooville last home match) to Tuesday night's cup replay - a total of 17 days or thereabouts. What happens to the pipes / pump ? Should they be cleaned ? I suppose someone in the trade would know the answers but again - the option of something from a freshly opened bottle seems the safer option.

There is no excuse for poor cellarmanship even with keg, but the beer is dispensed by gas pressure when the tap is opened and there is no pump involved. Keg is generally a pasteurised product and is much easier to look after than cask, which is a live and active product. You need to be particular looking after the pipework connecting a cask to the hand pump and line cleaning is essential to ensure the beer stays in good condition. You have more latitude with keg and together with the longer shelf life makes it more popular with many publicans.

I am definitely a cask lover and do not drink keg beer as it is far too gassy for my liking. There is a growing use of "keykegs" which is real ale in a keg but to dispense it the gas is applied externally and not pumped into the beer. Not as good as cask in my opinion but much better than full keg.
