Good post. I got enough abuse as a cricket umpire, would never be a football ref. Thankless task.

Fair point Alan. Much is also to do with perception as well. Went to Denbigh first XV against Caernarfon yesterday. Referee was poor but he was never questioned and always ‘sir’ to the final whistle. After the game there was no discussion about his decisions and he was welcomed into the club. Naturally the ref is not above criticism and that is the point of assessment but rugby players see the ref as almost a teammate who is trying his best and for sure someone they show respect.

The problem with refereeing is invariably a decision is going to piss someone off and the people on the wrong end of it simply don’t accept it.

I like it when supporters say refs were poor players, that’s why they referee. What does that make supporters!

How will standards improve? I suggest not whinging and moaning about refs so more get into the game.

The refs are average at best but we have to bigger and better in the way we play so we dont rely on these decisions.

You can’t ask for more than average.

I am completely fed up with the poorer than poor standard of refereeing this standard.
IMO the standard of referees is spoiling the game

Standard gripe!

From someone who has refereed up to Welsh Premier Level (and only gave up because of my age) I loved every week, couldn't wait for Saturday's and always tried to referee with a smile on my face. Tried to be definite in my decision making and always treated players with respect. Did I make mistakes? Yep, of course I did. Did I get the major decisions right, my referees assessments seem to suggest I did. Did players make mistakes? loads.

Yes, you will disagree with decisions.
Yes you think you deserve more than the other team.
Yes the other team are kicking us and you're not doing anything about it
Yes I know there are two teams playing
Yes I do have my eyes tested regularly
Actually I do know who my father is!!
All standard stuff
We have seen some poor performances by refs at the Cae Ras but put yourselves in their shoes, instant decision making, relying on your Assistants to confirm whether a goal has been scored.

Ironically the better refs seem to appear when we have played well and won!

Alot less than PL refs, who still get decisions wrong and some badly wrong, but that is football without VR.

We all moan about refs but not many have have been proved cheats, unlike some players, they only give what they see in that split second.

So how much?

£250 per game?

I really don’t know but oddly enough had been able to guess it’s less that the full time PL refs.
