Default Re: Kevin Keelan

Every generation can only really comment on what they see before them.
Before my time - not by much but I never saw heard him but heard lots about him.

My first memories were of Brian Lloyd - then I recall us signing Everton & Wales keeper Dai Davies who was part of our probable best ever league team.

Fond memories of Andy Marriott - they were good years under Brian Flynn.

Best ever keeper ? impossible to say, sometimes it helps if you have a good team infront of you and of course each generation can only relate to what they have seen before them in their time.

Seem to recall great stories about a massive keeper around the first Word War I seem to recollect - bit of a character - name escapes me, highly acclaimed.

As someone in their mid-20s, I can only comment on what I've heard about Keelan from older Wrexham fans - which is nothing but good.

The best goalkeeper I've seen at Wrexham is probably Marriott or Dibble (Andy, not Christian, although I like Christian too). Best since we've been in this league is Maxwell and the only competition is probably Bachmann or Coddington, but Maxwell gets the nod for a longer tenure.

It might be Leigh Roose that you refer to re First Wold War. He did come from Holt but never played for Wrexham but did perform at The Racecourse for Wales.. Died in the trenches ,

If I am right (please correct me if I am wrong)I seem to remember him coming to us from Kidderminster. I can remember him and Alan Fox giving an opposing centre forward a right good seeing to after he had challenged Keelan and the ball had been kicked down field and the ref and all the players followed it! But I agree he was outstanding in his day.

That's around the same time I started watching Wrexham.... And yes, Keelan was brilliant...Bit like Peter Bonneti....

I also remember a goalkeeper from those early days, who couldn't dive...Arthur Johnson I think his name was...

Pretty sure Leigh Roose was of the era of being a gentleman player, ie an amateur expenses only.
think there was a story was travelling from London to play in Stoke, missed the train so paid for a private charter train to travel to Stoke and presented the Stoke club with the receipt for them to pay.

Thanks - yes that's him - see that he never played for Wrexham but there is some video cover of a game he played in at Wrexham between Wales & Ireland in 1906 but the coverage seems to concentrate on the Welsh attacking the Irish goal.

Found this explanation about him though. There was also a book about him released which I seem to recall had a thread of it's own sometime ago.
