Ratings vs Eastleigh

Lainton 7 - didn't have a lot to do but held on to a couple of easy shots towards the end. He was very vocal in 2nd half. Been taking lessons from SP!

Roberts 7 - standard Roberts - hope the injury isn't too serious
Lawlor 7 - together with Smith, they never looked troubled
Smith 7 - welcome back Manny, looked like he had never been away. Did he break sweat?
Jennings 7 - scored a fluke/worldie which set us on our way and was decent all game

Summerfield 6 - played in front of the back 4 and it suppressed his natural tendency to set up attacks. Picked up the loose ball but not his best position for me.
Carrington 8 - he's here, he's there, he's everywhere. A proper footballer and his best game for a while.
Akil 8 - thought he struggled early on but grew into the role. Could have been Motm but for that miss.
Rutherford 7 - quiet first half but was a revelation once Young came on and seemed to enjoy the freedom he was given.

Beavon 7 - his link up play with Grant was excellent. The problem with playing the diamond in midfield is that the front 2 lack the support up front but I thought they were excellent.
Grant 7 - took his goal well and led the line against some sizeable opponents! I think he needs a couple more games to be really sharp but very pleased with his contribution.

Young 7 - although he wasn't on for the whole game, his contribution was excellent. He never stopped running and it was no coincidence that Rutherford improved when he came on.
Fondop n/a
Holroyd n/a

Team - we worked harder that at any time this season. The closing down was excellent and we never gave Eastleigh a minute. A fully deserved victory.

MOTM - the group of us who sit together couldn't decide and we all gave it to different players. Didn't disagree with Carrington but could have been Manny, Akil or Beavon.

Well done GB and JJ and the rest of the backroom staff. You have done an amazing job this week.

Mom Rutherford for me not only set the first and second goals but assisted on three other chances that should have been taken. But I would not quibble on the skipper, best game he’s played in midfield I can remember.

Certainly getting the respect he deserves from his players is Mr Barrow.

I’d give Roberts a 5 backwards and slow

Give over, got hurt from a great crunching tackle, twinged it for a second time and did his utmost to carry on for the team. Àpart from that he's paid to defend well and did his job, but he did get down the wing a few times in his 51 minutes

Solid back 5 and the foundation for the performance.
Jennings is so much better when he does the basics and not all the ranting at the ref.

Wright did a lot of positives but still made basic mistakes and lost the ball in dangerous positions and Summerfield was the same. Thankfully Carra and Ruthers put their shifts in.
Beavon another grafting display but felt we carried Grant first half. His goal was put on a plate but he still failed to hit the target each time afterwards.
Young did well but Holroyd and Fondop are just bench warmers :)

Agree with most of that but a bit harsh on Grant. He is still match-rusty but helped stretch their defence. His ‘missed chances’ were on his right foot and not that far off target in bloody awful conditions. Hopefully, more to come.:)

How many more games do we have him for?

Was told yesterday that if we offered him a contract he'd sign it. We'll see!

End of December, I believe; so 5 games. We then need to give him a 2 1/2 year contract.

kevjones1964 9th December 2018 09.07:44

Re: Ratings vs Eastleigh

5 games is still enough time for him to make a good positive contribution. If he doesn’t sign after that, at least it will be the right time to get someone else in.

Re: Ratings vs Eastleigh

Lainton (7) Not tested but did all that was required in awful conditions.

Roberts (7) Thought he played well but took 2 heavy knocks.

M Smith (8) Has he been away?

Lawlor (8) Moved to LHS but looked assured.

Jennings (8) Excellent cross for the goal, which helped changed the game early on. Thought that was his best game for ages.

Carrington (8) Great performance from Mr Dependable.

Wright (8) If only he can improve his positional play. I would play him wide right, where his pace would be put to good effect.

Summerfield (6) Struggled in the conditions but never gave up.

Rutherford (8) Bags of effort and 2 assists.

Grant (7) Still ‘ring-rusty’ but he looks like a goal-scorer, albeit he’s not a genuine striker.

Beavon (8) His work-rate is first-class and unlucky not to get on the end of a few strong crosses.

Subs:

Young (7) Brought much needed directness.

Fondop-Talom and Holroyd - Not on too long, but neither look good enough.

Great win in very difficult circumstances. Well done!:)

Would agree with most of your ratings but if we are to be a real threat this season we need to improve again.
Full backs are both very limited and slow play down as they are too one footed. This results in them stopping their runs and turning back looking for support. They seem frightened to take the opposing full back on.
Midfield are holding their own but seem to lack leadership.
Grant has improved us up front and suits a 442.
Onwards and upwards.

Spot on for me PD - especially the comments about Manny and Jennings - he looked good going forward and his best game for a while for me.

I really like Grant - please get him signed up NOW!

Roberts had little/no protection or movement from midfield and we know who was playing there! He also got nailed 3 times...

Lainton 7 no saves to make but good handling on a slippy day

Roberts 6 struggled after getting clattered, but ok
Manny 6 thought he looked far from match fit, but decision making good as always
Lawlor 7 did well after getting switched across
Jennings 8 MOTM early goal settled it and gave him and the team confidence

Carrington 8 really good, good shout for sponsors motm
Either 6 quiet but worked hard
Wright 7 did well
Summerfield 7 quiet by his standards but still an important contribution

Beavon 7 typical hard working performance
Grant 8 lovely finish. Couldn't guarantee that with the other strikers

Subs
Young 8 ace. He would start every week for me
Holroyd perfect composed replacement for beavon
Fondop
