[BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46592777
Former Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey would be interested in the vacant manager's job at Wrexham. The National League side are expected to appoint a new manager before Saturday's match away at Aldershot Town. Askey has not been approached by Wrexham, but the 54-year-old is available after leaving League One side Shrewsbury Town in November. The 54-year-old led Macclesfield to last season's National League title. He was sacked by Shrewsbury just five months into his new job at New Meadow. Sam Ricketts left Wrexham to succeed Askey at Shrewsbury and assistant manager Graham Barrow has been in interim charge at the Racecourse. Barrow, the former Wigan Athletic manager, has said he does not expect Dennis Lawrence to be appointed as the club's new manager. Trinidad & Tobago coach Lawrence, who played 198 games for Wrexham, has been heavily linked with the job since Ricketts' departure. |

Don't call us, we'll call you.

Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
If we haven’t spoke to him by now we won’t be interested

All opinion but whilst gaz is no doubt right that the Board would have been in contact if interested even if he isn't the right appointment surely he as a bare minimum warrants being interviewed? |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
If you don't Askey, you don't getty.
|
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
Doesnt he need to apply just like the others.
|
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
Of course he's interested
1. He's on the dole. 2. We're a very good prospect based on who our last 2 managers have been poached by. 3. We're a huge side for our level. |

Apparently we interviewed him at least once before. Guessing if he didn’t fit what we wanted then, he doesn’t now. |

Wasn’t it pre-Keates? When it was a choice between an up and comer or someone who had muddled around mid-table with Macc for a while. Now he is the most recent title winner, available for free, and he may have just been outperformed at interview last time and may not be again. If he did want it I’d expect it to have to be a pretty strong candidate that saw him off. |

At least according to Coyne anyway. He does seem to have a good eye for a player though but I'd still echo dixie and have Challinor as first choice. |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
Id rather have Clarke over either but if it's a choice between Askey and Challinor to me it's a no brainer and that's Askey based on actual success and no compensation being required.

Posted via mobile theme
This 100% for me. Clarke would be the ideal choice, but means Barrow and Darlington will be given the push I'd have thought. |

I agree, Challinor only has a contact til the end of May so compo wont be too much. I like the way he plays and his players discipline is ace, plus he is pals with Barrow |

Hasn’t he signed a new contract until 2021? |

Someone said he'd signed a new 3 year deal but maybe that's not the case. Posted via mobile theme |

Successful in lower leagues in a big budget, with Fylde at least not sure 're Colwyn Bay. Askey has done it in this league with what appears to be a modestly talented and inexpensive squad albeit I know there is suspicion about how small the budget actually was. I am far from an Askey advocate and there are a few I'd pick ahead of him but I can't get excited about Challinor at all. Posted via mobile theme |

Unless the chairman at Fylde has told Challinor of his intention to leave and take over at a proper club, the club he really wants, Blackpool. |

Posted via mobile theme
June 2021 according to the report when he signed. Judging by SH comments then he would have had to apply so that would be a good sign if true. Unless were chasing DL then I would expect the same. Doesn’t seem as though Askey has applied either. Maybe the no rush is because we dont have anyone worth appointing yet. |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
I believe he was invited to apply before Ricketts was appointed but never responded. Can’t see him getting a look in now.
Has anyone rung sir Darren yet on the off chance he’d be up for the challenge? |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
thought askey was keeping his powder dry for the chesterfield job he could be hedging his bets hope it is challinor myself and brings rowe with him
|
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
I'd be thrilled with Askey, Challinor or Clarke.
Let's give 'em all a ring. |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
I suppose Paul Hurst is out of our league. But imagine how the Salop lot would feel if we got him.
|
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
If he hasn't been approached yet, it isn't him.
The board wouldn't be stupid enough to have given GB a new deal without agreement of the new manager....would they? |

Yeh they would be laughing waiting for him to jump ship for another club like Telford :( |
Re: [BBC] John Askey: Ex-Shrewsbury manager interested in Wrexham vacancy
Let’s be realistic here, it has to be someone that has
A. Been approached B. Agreed to work with GB as his assistant C. Must have worked with or knows GB Who fits that? DL and Challinor I’d guess? Any others fit the bill? |

Posted via mobile theme
When this comparison was done with DL / Askey some on here got terribly defensive and arsey, again it was a big bright flashing no brainer. I wonder why that was? |
