Lockerbie disaster 21.12.1988 - 30 years tonight

Thought this was worthy of a mention.

Can you remember where you were on 21 December 1988 ?

The night of the Lockerbie disaster.

At the time we were doing very well in the old 4th division - from memory I think we were top having just won away at Burnley.

On 21 December 1988 we played Chester at the old Sealand Road ground in the Preliminary round of the Sherpa Van Trophy.

A night match under floodlight at the old ground on a dry mild night with a massive away following banked up on the uncovered away terrace.
We took a 0 - 2 lead with Roger Preece scoring a diving header right infront of the away fans - we played in our all green away kit that night. Chester got a goal back but we went on to win 1 - 2 infront of an attendance of 3,887.
Still remember being held up in traffic after the game as the police escorted a large contingent of Wrexham fans back to the railway station.

Meanwhile as we celebrated a win and were jubilant and in a happy Christmas mood, high up in the night sky a plane was about to explode.
Personally that event stayed with me - everytime I hear the Lockerbie word I remember that derby match.

Was anyone else there that night ?

............................................................................................

On this day in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York explodes in mid air over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members aboard, as well as 11 Lockerbie residents on the ground. A bomb hidden inside an audio cassette player detonated in the cargo area when the plane was at an altitude of 31,000 feet. The disaster, which became the subject of Britain’s largest criminal investigation, was believed to be an attack against the United States. One hundred eighty nine of the victims were American.

Islamic terrorists were accused of planting the bomb on the plane while it was at the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. Authorities suspected the attack was in retaliation for either the 1986 U.S. air strikes against Libya, in which leader Muammar al-Qaddafi’s young daughter was killed along with dozens of other people, or a 1988 incident, in which the U.S. mistakenly shot down an Iran Air commercial flight over the Persian Gulf, killing 290 people

I was at that game, my first derby. The walk to and from the station was "interesting"

The wreckage was put together attached to scaffolding in a big hangar at Farnborough. It's the worst thing I've ever seen.

I was based at RAF Lossiemouth that year, and drove through Lockerbie a few days before the incident as I headed back to WREXHAM on leave.

As awful as it seems, thank God the device exploded then and not when the aircraft approached Glasgow.

It was an awful act, and we should continue to remember those who died as they too headed home for Christmas, but never got to see their loved ones.

RIP.

Was at the game as well, was happy at the result and then arrived home to see that on the news. The wickedness of some people is hard to understand.Went up to Scotland a day or so after and passed through Lockerbie and you could see debris on the side of the dual carriageway and the smell of aviation fuel in the air.My thoughts are with all those involved.

My one and only visit to the old Sealand Road ground and only made another away derby game last season since.

The highs and low's of humanity that night. RIP to those involved and affected by this awful act.

Showing those 'stock' pictures in newspapers and on TV must be torture for those families involved in this terrible act. Do we really need to be visually reminded?

Remember the game and the walk back to the station well and Roger Preece diving header. Milton Graham hit the post for them from about a yard out right in front of me lol. Got back and heard a plane had crashed in Scotland. Didnt realise the significance till i watched the news the next day rip
