Default Re: January the end of Holroyd & Fondop...

We all have differing views on players and in addition to Fondop, Deverdics, Holroyd who have propped up the bench for most of the season we have others that lack a bit when the chips are down.

As a comparison look at players like Pearson, Manny, Lawlor, Walker and to an extent Beavon (who has improved since the start). These players have far more good games than poor games, they regularly hit the 7-9 ratings and they are or have been the crux of the team week in week out.

Why do we then justify these underperformers and think they will suddenly come good? Lets face it history shows they wont and they never will and will only end up further down the ladder.

We would be far better going out and signing 1 or 2 of the better players from Alty, Telford etc....... to fit alongside our strong spine of the team than we would persevering with players that struggle to rate a 6 most weeks. See Tilt as an example.

Any improvement is just that an improvement so thats what we should be aiming for and not accept mediocre.

He's obviously not a Barrow type of player so probably won't get another look in here but is good enough for a bottom half conference team and if persevered with and regains confidence could go higher.

Therein lies the problem.

Fondop has been a strange one this season. He couldn't stop scoring in pre-season and in the first few games, but his head seemed to drop when he tried to lob the keeper when we played Bromley and the keeper read it, making Fondop look quite silly (despite Fondop pulling it off earlier in the game for his goal) and he hasn't truly got his confidence back since.

As an impact sub, I can remember one game he had an impact on (Harrogate FA Cup replay) but other than that has been ineffective off the bench. If we can find better this month, no reason why he can't go to a NLN club on loan.

Holroyd hasn't really had a fair shake this season. A lot of his appearances have been him coming on with about 15 minutes to go. Really clever footballer and can get a few goals if given more time to get them.

Do you mind explaining what you mean by raw please? He's 24 now. I'd expect a lad who claims to be able to play football, coached or not, to be able to control a ball and pass it.

A few of you have asked me the same question so forgive me for not quoting anyone directly.

By raw I mean the fact, as has been well documented and debated, that he's come into the professional game via an unconventional route and hasn't had the grounding of being at a professional club since his teens.

In that context whilst he is mid 20s he's effectively on a par with a 17/18 year old. Now I do happen to agree that where we are now is a crucial time where we need as many fully polished players possible to give us the best chance of promotion and based on that I would loan Fondop out for the rest of this season. I did feel the need to defend him though with people calling him a clown, not a footballer etc as that's very harsh in my view and the fact he's the top scorer still suggests our other so called strikers aren't that much better!!

Dennis Lawrence looked like a clown early in his career with us and got a lot of grief. Look how that turned out...

Good comparison. I do get the desperation to get out of the league at all costs but if we keep chucking out anyone who doesn't perform 8/10 each week we are potentially missing a trick. That said there's clearly some dead wood in the squad, mainly Deverdics and Holroyd that aren't going to improve.

we need a professional Center Forward not a player who can play there if needed an out and out CF, neither Fondop or Holroyd fit the bill
