Default Re: Welsh Rugby in North Wales

If this happens it 100% happens at Eirias Park but some of the reaction is interesting:

1. “We don’t want them here ruining our pitch”. Anyone who follows WFC at all ought to realise that if someone pays the money for the venue, especially as it would likely come alongside investment into the pitch and maybe other facilities, they will get the green light.

2. “Nobody wants to watch rugby up here”. An interesting, and incorrect, point of view given reasonable attendances for Wales A and Under 20 games, visits from the Scarlets, the success of RGC and, despite an assertion to the contrary, Crusaders averaging 4600 gates in their first season in Wrexham. The latter is particularly interesting; there are loads of caveats when it comes to discussing that figure (ticket deals, some visitors coming in numbers, lack of sustainability in subsequent seasons) but the fact is that’s how many people went to games from a standing start. Despite being an inferior spectator sport, a Rugby Union team would connect more meaningfully than a Rugby League one, and I think the numbers who would watch that team might surprise doubters. Plus given the status of a possible northern region as a WRU owned development team, numbers through the gate would be less of a concern early on when compared to other aspects of development, although that may also be something to work on.

Fair comments JS.

Eirias Park is/would be the best location as it’s central in north wales.

I think the initial idea years ago was for two regional teams in North Wales, one based in Wrexham and the other in Colwyn Bay. Ultimately the WRU decided one team would be enough.

I live in Colwyn Bay and through work and family commitments attend more RGC games than Wrexham games. RGC average around a 1500 crowd I'd say, which isn't bad considering the number of away fans at that level is usually well well below 100. Sometimes just a dozen or so. The concept of RGC becoming a region has been around since they were created. I always thought it a fanciful idea for 2 reasons -
1. Even though Eirias has a capacity of around 6,000, I didn't think that could support regional rugby.
2. The other regions draw the best players from the same division that RGC currently play in, plus throwing bigger money at imports. RGC draw their squad from the league 2 divisions below them, as well as some (cheaper) imports.

On the first point, I was chatting to an Irish lad at work, who is a big Leinster fan. He say that a lot of the teams in the Pro 14 have home attendances of around the 6,000-10,000 mark so Eirias wouldn't be entirely out of place.
On the second point, if they make RGC a development team then they would draw the best young talent from across Wales. So a development team may well happen but I think it would be in Colwyn Bay.

they shouldn't get the green light.

But it would if a deal was on the table. Firstly, money. Secondly, the boost to the local area (remember when we marched through the town to save the ground telling all and sundry that it wasn’t just for 3000 drunks to abuse footballers but a valuable community resource? Yeah, that). Thirdly, that the deal wouldn’t be likely to involve thirty blokes smashing the turf to pieces 15 times a year and walking away, but would have to involve rather more care. Those things would make it happen and make it a positive thing to happen. But you don’t have to worry about that, it’ll be based at Eirias Park.

Bizarre really - it could only happen at Wrexham.

Here we are top of the league and on the finishing straight - a big important game coming up in 3 days time - no thread on the Chesterfield game and yet one of the most popular threads involves rugby or moreso the fear of our playing surface getting ruined.

That’s because there are 24 hours in a day and it’s possible to talk and think about lots of different things. If you want a different thread, start one.

You can all speak for your selves. But I think there is a lot of support for rugby union in the Wrexham area especially for this country we live in.

Plenty of people love the national team but local level rugby isn’t well supported in north wales.
