Its right footed players playing on the left and vice versa. If teams play a 433 they have to use them to stop the central striker becoming isolated. It does mean less width though. If Hughes is talking about changing it he is really taking about 532 or 442.

We've had some OK strikers over the last few years, in my view. Oswell should be able to score plenty of goals at this level.

I think we need to look at our formation. We're massively solid at the back but that's at the expense of creating enough chances to score, and having enough people in the box to finish things off. Essentially, we need to take more risks. We'll concede more, but hopefully score more too, and turn some draws into wins.

“It was a simple economic argument from day one.

“If you want to get out of the National League a budget of £700,000 or £800,000 won’t get you out and it will cost you two or three times as much to get out the longer you are down there.

“It’s cheaper to spend more and go up. It’s simple economics and we have the ability to do that.

Interesting. I think our budget is around the 800k mark isn't it?

Its easy for him to say that because they have more than one multi millionaire owner.

There's a few people sharing that article on Wrexham AFC fans chat as if it's some major pearl of wisdom. As someone who's not averse to external investment on the right terms, my main concerns though would be how do we spend money we don't currently have and what happens if we do and that plan fails? Forest Green made losses of several million for a few years before going up. Without a big money backer it's simply not sustainable. Plus you have to be certain you have a benefactor who a) won't pull the plug if things don't go their way and b) won't try and recall the money pumped in as a loan as previous owners have done. The Class of 92's money doesn't even scratch the surface compared to the real backer Peter Lim.

Yeah I know and I wasn't suggesting we should go for broke in one season or anything more to highlight what we're up against.

The way the club is now, its going to be very difficult to get promoted as there will always be another team with more money to spend.

It means the Board have to be smarter, our manager has to be ahead of the game player recruitment wise etc etc. Things like signing loan players that never play needs to stop.

The only way I can see us boosting funds before the season starts (when the best players are available) is to borrow against projected attendance, which has held-up remarkably well considering. What collateral would be needed I don't know? The amount would have to be a sum which repaid by/at the end of the season.

I'd much rather do something like this and go through January with no more funds available (dependant on football fortune), but have a better squad from the off. It seems to me that funds are released as they come through the gates (yes I know why) through the season, which explains our difficulty with signing quality in the summer, but collecting a swath of average to poor players throughout the season.

He's probably right in general terms although clubs have gone up on far lower budgets than Salfords. Also its easy to talk now as if they went up on the back of their good decisions, but the truth is that they were very close to going out of the play offs against Eastleigh.

No way Macc spent that and Lincoln only had @ £150k extra before the cup run which didnt buy them the league. Yes £2.4m would be a good wedge for promotion but we have what we have at the moment and must spend it better.
