The main purpose of friendlies is to get the players match-ready after all isn't it?

I suppose the initial games are just a glorified training session so we can play the locks teams just as a chance to play a game as an XI. Let the fans see new signings etc. Then play better opposition as the summer goes on. I agree there seems more value playing teams at this level or similar (League 2 maybe or decent NLN teams) to prepare for the league.

Agree there is a big element for match sharpness but you would also take a 8-0 battering from Liverpool if it brought an extra £50k to transfer budget

I think league 2 and conference north teams should be our friendlies.
