If a league one team came in for Hughes and he decided it was too big an opportunity to miss, realistically what could we do ?

The Barrow fiasco on the other hand, agreed, entirely preventable, completely puzzling (more so even than his team selections) and did more damage than losing to Orient if we are talking why we weren't champions.

ask yourself how many clubs who are doing well lose their manager mid season?

Did Orient ?
Salford ?
Solihull Moors ?

We do because of the contracts we give them.

If Hughes is a failure next season he will be sacked. If he is OK we will plod on with him and hope for the best . If he is successful he will be gone by Christmas. It’s a no win situation.

What creates this shambles ? Partly the ownership model and partly the fact that the owners are amateurs dabbling in something they know nothing about.

Don’t start this claptrap again. The LMA dictates managers’ contracts. Provide a shred of proof our contracts are any different to any other club and I might start listening to you.

The LMA does not dictate contracts. It sets advisory guidelines . Within that, the contracts can vary enormously.

LMA aside you can’t have a contract under employment law which doesn’t allow a person to leave if they want to. The level of compensation is a matter for negotiation when entering into the contract and of course some clubs do better than us in convincing managers to stay put but I defy you to come up with any legitimate contract wording that could’ve stopped managers leaving us.

I have one that says I have to give two months notice. So am I the only person in the country who can’t leave a job when he wants to ?

And what would your company do if you simply walked out and didn’t give that notice? They’d then have to sue you for breach of contract but it wouldn’t be cost effective to do so. Equally how motivated are you going to be during that 2 months with an eye on your next job? Then imagine you are watched at work by thousand of people who slag off you and your employer for any mistake you make during that notice period. Does any of that become worth it?

The way I believe it works in football is it’s assumed at the outset unlike normal jobs that a manager will breach their notice period to resign given the nature of the industry and agrees a set compensation sum for what would otherwise be the breach of contract claim.

I completely accept people in normal jobs have notice periods from 1 week up to 3 or 6 months but a) that isnt the same as keeping someone against their will indefinitely and b) football management is a very different and unique industry.

I think most people have to work a notice period. But, is it practical for a manager to work a notice period once they’ve had their head turned?
Can you imagine them doing their best for the club?
No.
So, do you then sack them for being poor and overseeing poor results?
That brings in compensation possibly.
