I may have had that one wrong but am still not totally convinced either one way or the other. Last season I left every match struggling to give him marks out of ten because he actually had very little to do.

Grant ? I hope Iím wrong because there is a player there but I will be very surprised if I am. This is a player who the manager himself would have released if Grant hadnít had an absurd ability to retain himself.

I believe he had the most clean sheets in the top 5 divisions which must have had something to do with him ? I saw him have some imperious games - Bwood away springs to mind.

Regarding Grant - how do you know he would have been released ?

I think the clean sheets were more to do with two top notch centre halves, a very organised back 4 (protected by Walker) and an ultra defensive approach across the whole team. This left an isolated striker up front. The lack of goals was definitely linked with the high number of clean sheets. That is, the clean sheets werenít really a result of Lainton saves.

Iím assuming the obvious in terms of Grant bring released. His attitude and form were so poor, that itís hard to think that any manager on the planet would retain him.

Interesting because if you compare us with Solihull for example our 'ultra defensive' approach apparently allowed 234 shots on target while theirs allowed only 89 (if we believe FBREF). A rough average of 5 shots a game and 21 clean sheets is not so bad for me.
regarding Grant I just wanted to establish that you were assuming - which is never a problem just defines its authenticity.

Grant didnt impress me last season but even so he bizarrely could have ended up as our top scorer he must have hit the woodwork 7/8 times.
Glad the reports are more postive in pre season

I think that is very harsh on Lainton. Give him some credit, its not just about sticking a good defense in front of any old Joe.

Agree on Lainton.

The announcement that Grant had exercised an option in his contract to be retained certainly suggested to me that he wouldnít have been kept without that option.

I wouldn't read too much into the announcement, it just stated a matter of fact. (Opinion) If Grant has any ambition to enjoy his football, to be considered first choice and do well here, he wouldn't have signed if the management team were not 100% behind his decision. It's irrelevant now we have a slimmer and from accounts fitter player, who says he is determined to show he can do much better than last season. If he does this, he can be a big character for us.

We want to attract players with good FL pedigree to the NL then we have to be imaginative with contracts.

Have to say it's so much better when a player gives honest interviews and doesn't do the generic rubbish that 99% do. Always know Grant and Shaun will do interviews worth watching unlike the rest
