Sounds a more plausible reason for a delay in signing.
I assume that if they offered him a new contract on the same or better terms then there are grounds. However if he is out of contract then I assume were checking our legal position before he can sign the contract.

No grounds for this just an opinion.

If the club wants to be really tight, hold off for 8 weeks til he’s 24

If he is on their retained list then he will have a contract with them therefore in 8 weeks the transfer window is shut for us.

I thought the rule about compensation for U24’s only stood if the player was an academy graduate at the club losing him?
