Hope he does , for me it doesn't work , Rutherford is not good enough for one thing , and burton would be better in a deep midfield role , we have two really good central defenders , Just need a right wing back , IMO

Any system which puts 3 at the back takes time and, more importantly, the right players.

If I was Hughes, I’d be reluctant to change from a back 4 as it was our strength last season and we’ve shipped out the weakest link of that back 4 so should be stronger this season.

Maybe with the inclusion of Barton, he could be deployed in a similar manner to Chris Blackburn so in possession he drops deeper to allow both full backs to push on so we’re not left with just two at the back. It’s a fairly common tactic but supporters will accuse Barton of not being attack minded or being a crab. That sort of thing.
Obviously this. This 343 is strange, but I presume it is just experimental.

I don’t see the point though. Playing a strange formation against highly technical opposition that we will not come up against this season.

Shouldn’t we be hammering home the formation that we WILL be playing? Which we all know will be a 4 man defence, regardless of what is in front of them.

Barton did seem to be at fault in the build up for all three goals, and he was playing a lot of dangerous balls. he eventually settled in, but i don't think he should be playing as a centre back. he would be much better placed in midfield

One would assume he did it specifically because this was our first opportunity to test it on the big racecourse pitch, which is where he has stated he would use it I think.

The players he has signed don't fit this new shape though I know that.

I agree with AA its the right time to try it.
Barton is supposed to be the DM in midfield 3 it was indicated.
If we stay 433 then we need the RB.

Perm Barton with Summers, Redmonde and 1 other from Young , Wright or even Ruthers if we need hard work and running in there. Although I am still concerned we need a midfield general in here as Barton might not be an organiser just a DM.

The front 3 is then about balance. Hooper, Harris/McIntosh, Grant/Oswell with Ruthers again available for his hard work
We know last years 3 doesnt work and its the new players that have better pace and more creativity.

Grants started scoring and maybe he will be a bigger influence in games.
Lets see.

Football is a simple game and at the moment Hughes is making it harder than it needs to be.

He has the defenders available to make it a solid back 4, indeed the back 4 that was so successful last year: Carrington, Lawlor, Pearson and Jennings

He has the defensive midfield player who potentially can do what Brad Walker was doing (Barton) thus allowing 2 of his more attacking midfield players (Young, Summerfield, Wright and Devante) greater freedom.

Its a real mystery why he is persisting with this ridiculous attempt to copy the Dutch from the 1970s. All he had to do was build on a solid defensive record , replace Walker and get the front three right, but he seems to think he is Pol Pot and has gone back to Year Zero. No good can come of this.

Pitch at Nine Acres is the exact same size. I assume he wants to see how his first choice eleven adapt to it against a good team
