We have taken a close look at him over the last month.

He’s clearly impressed BH and the backroom staff and that’s enough for me.

Much will depend on how BH intends to play formation wise.

it might vary over different games but I get the impression he wants to perhaps go with 5 across the back including two wing backs in Barnum Bobb and Jennings.

However, if one or more is injured or suspended perhaps this formation would struggle for alternative options - the other angle is we would need 3 centre backs - Pearson, Lawlor, possibly Barton or Tharme - or Tharme with Barton in midfield.

Whatever method he goes with will provide positives and negatives.

Of course having 3 centre backs on the pitch at any one time would mean a 'lost' position elsewhere - and if one was injured during a game and had to be withdrawn then would we need a 4th CB on the bench or revert to versatility and either change formation or drop Barton back into defence.

it all sounds plausible.......but maybe we are thin on numbers in the event of injury ib critical positions especially the wing back roles.

No because everyone we sign is fantastic and the best in the league at that position. Remember us being told that about Sean Newton!

I am getting carried away. I love this time of year - good reports about new signings, YouTube clips of players performing miracles, skipping past defenders, banging in the goals, making great tackles, no team has more points than us, we haven’t conceded a goal, no red or yellow cards. What’s not to like? Let us dream in peace before reality kicks in.

If playing 3 at the back equates to a “lost” position then we’re not playing it correctly.

If Manny Smith was anywhere near close to fitness I’d be content with 3 at the back but he’s not.

As mentioned on another thread, 4 at the back isn’t broken so doesn’t need fixing. Dropping Barton in to allow both full backs to push on is an option but Hughes needs options in games like this.

I don’t know if this squad is better than last seasons. It appears a bit better equipped but it’s hard to say until we play meaningful games.
