Wrexham fans were fickle back in the day. They didn't know how good they had it.

What happened to the other 10,000 who were there regularly in 1978 a division below ? (Just 2 years earlier). It's no wonder we only sustained Championship football for 4 years. The fans clearly didn't support it well enough
16K plus was only for the last couple of games (Palace & Mansfield), In the last 50 years I don't think we have ever averaged above 10K. The quality of the opposition and away fans only have so much bearing but regardless of league home fans will turn up if the team is consistently winning. Our big advantage these days, is fans have more buy-in being fan owned, there was always resentment amongst many not to line the chairman's pockets.

PS the 1978 side was a very special time for Wxm AFC.

The club will never get far if fans will only turn out in numbers if we're in the top 3 of any given division.

I remember mid 90's mid table League 1 at home would be 3,500- 4,000.It just isn't sustainable especially for a fans run club

If got promoted to League 2 and got off to a bad start would we be back down to 3,000 again ?

In 1980 the town and surrounding areas had been hit with job losses and money was tight. I remember my dad being made redundant from shotton steelworks one of several thousand who all went on the same day. The football clubs gates dropped dramatically from the highs of the 78/79 season it was a rapid decline and we ended up with crowds of less than 2000 under bobby roberts when we were relegated again in 82/83

I get that ,however Wrexham fans have a history of rollercoaster attendances.

18,000 followings to both Cardiff and Wembley but next league games at home 3-4,000.

Will be over 6,000 Saturday.Lose, and the next home gate will be 4,000.I'm sure Wrexham aren't alone but the fickleness of fairweather fans is an annoyance.

In fairness last season's attendances held up pretty well so let's hope fans ownership is starting to convince the bandwagon jumpers to stay on the wagon after one bad result.

Someone said exactly that to me the other day "I'll give them the first game.If they lose I won't be back".Just had to walk away.

They don't realise that money through the turnstiles means more money, means better players, means more chance of winning.

There must be lots of factors that determine the size of the home crowd.

Winning games convincingly, a high entertainment value and being top or near the top of the table help.

But why do we get the attendances we do compared to other clubs ?

Is our appeal as the only club in North Wales at this level important ?
How many supporters live in Wrexham Borough compared to those that don't ?
What is the composition of our crowds ? season ticket holders / pay on the day ratio ?
Age bracket ratio - senior citizens. adults. kids ?
Match day - traditionally lots always turn out on a Saturday for first league match minus those on holiday in August which will be considerable.
However, regardless of the result a Tuesday night match would not normally give us the same numbers as a Saturday afternoon.
School holidays compared with a normal school night.
Has the club ever done any research and analysed their own season ticket sales with a view to targeting more supporters ?

Ultimately keep getting results and entertaining the crowd and we will be OK - in fact there could be an argument that we could possibly generate higher attendances near the top of the National League than if we gained promotion and languished near the bottom end of L2 / balanced against the level of away support.
