Although it's getting harder and harder for youths to break into our first team and hold down a place in the team. |

Re: Thorn
We have significant competition for places in midfield now - it would take an exceptional teenager to break into the team and stay there taking the place of an older experience and established player who will have a fair few seasons under his belt.
Some of us probably reflect on the Brian Flynn era when he had little choice but to throw in a load of youngsters and play them continually - Wayne Phillips, Gareth Owen then Dave Brammer - Phil Hardy at full back and Jon Cross. Now realistically, unless we have a really bad run of injuries and suspensions there is little chance - managers will always play it safe and turn to the old heads unless there is nothing to play for in the closing matches of the season or we are 3 - 0 up with 5 minutes to go and a teenager is given minimalistic game time from the bench. Problem is not necessarily making a debut - it's being able to play at a consistently high standard both home and away for a prolonged period - to my mind youths with little experience don't have the mindset and mental toughness to do this. The other factor which has changed which didn't exist a few decades ago is that the game is now awash with players from other countries which has a knock on effect down the pyramid - the Premier League and Championship are full of foreign players squeezing the possibility of home grown youth having the same opportunities as they once did. Managers (and who can blame them) must be aware they have little room for error and experimentation - we live for the here and now - gambling on the potential of a teenager is not the safe option - unless of course your at a club with little alternative option and have no choice but to play them. |

Re: Thorn
I don't like our players going on loan to Welsh Premier clubs , because the same rules apply as with the English Premier League in other words we cant get them back until the January window.
This is fine if the player is so far down the pecking order they are unlikely to be needed for the fist team. |

Would say Doug Tharme is our best youth prospect but with signing Chambers then he went down the pecking order.......and was loaned out to AFC Telford United. However, a couple of injuries or suspensions at the same time combined with the long term injury to Manny Smith and we would be struggling in central defence especially with the additional Scottish Cup competition and potential additional games - but I suppose it's a gamble - balancing the possibility of shortages against the desire to provide up and coming players with game time - there is always the emergency loan option if we hit a difficult patch and were suddenly struggling for players in specific positions. |

I hope as a club we are pushing as much as possible to ensure he gets game time otherwise it’s completely pointless |

We have had plenty of loanees in recent seasons - rumours spread that despite their poor on field performances we just had to give them game time - this simply can't be right - the manager should be held accountable but also have a free reign to select the best team he can with the players available at his disposal regardless of whether they are a loanee that their parent club expects them to waltz into the first team unchallenged. Telford have established older players at the back - Streete to name one - for Tharme it will be a case of hopefully gaining more game time than he would get with us.......but he doesn't have an automatic right to a Telford shirt just because he is on loan from the mighty Wrexham - will be interesting to see how he gets on there and who, if anyone he displaces from their team on a regular basis. |

Re: Thorn
Regardless if Tharme establishes himself as a first choice centre back, he is likely to be in the 16 every week and get more minutes than here and has shown he can do a job at right back as cover. In the scheme of things he is still young and inexperienced so this is a big chance to show he has the potential to keep progressing.
