There is an excellent article in today’s Times by Gregor Robertson regarding Flyde’s new manager and his time at Morecombe in which he says ....

“Success in football, and particularly in the lower leagues, should not be measured simply by silverware and medals, but by relationships forged, loyalty pledged and, sometimes, plain old survival. Bentley, who until he resigned as Morecambe manager last week was the longest-serving manager in England’s top four divisions, and his players had long been the ultimate survivors.”

It is also cautionary tale for those clubs, and spectators, who hanker after after a benevolent investor! Well worth reading.

Surely the point is that they have survived in the league? is surviving in this league now our aim?

I suppose it's also about who you are and where you are?

Morecombe are a small club with a small fanbase, they are punching above their weight.

At the moment we’re at our level.
We cannot afford to go up. Tragedy would be going down.

We need to go up a division because of the extra income it would give.
This however would mean and need restructure and reorganisation changes.

Changes at board level are difficult because these people run the club and finding replacements will be extremely difficult.

How much bigger than Fylde are we really as a fan owned club against their potential revenue.

I dont expect us to get relegated this season but hopefully a flirtation with relegation to the 6th tier is the wake up call everyone needs to start reassessing how we are run and how realistically that can be improved eg a different ownership model, some new board members. If we dont learn from where we are then before long we will drop down.

Spencer & Co definatly thought relegation was an impossability.
Its the only explanation I can think of for their team manager selection policy, after Milla presumably took them to the cleaners.

I also read a very good article in "The Times" on this subject a couple of months ago. It would of course be wonderful to get a jack walker who loved Blackburn FC and funded them to the title. However not forgetting the nightmare with our last owner we only have to look at Chester's experience. As we all know they had to fold and start again. I seem to remember the thrust of the article I read was that passing the "fit and proper person test" does not ensure that a "sugar daddy" has the best interests of the club at heart. A Jack Walker would be awesome but we have to be very careful what we wish for.
