Default Martyn KIng

Wrexham Centre forward from mid 60s..has passed away..
Was Colchester 's all time record goalscorer and held record for number of hat tricks for them...
Think he may have been centre forward in 65/66 when we finished bottom of division 4....

He was a former University graduate who also played tennis. Bumped into him once during the NW Championships at Denbigh.

Hey 1926 I played in those championships in the late 60s Seem to recall the courts were next to the local hospital.

That's a co-incidence! You are right about the location, it was part of the mental hospital grounds. My tennis career took me from Norman Road to Llanerch TC in Rhos/Ponciau via a short spell at Garden Village.

Sorry to hear this. I remember Martyn well. Was not always popular with the fans but he always tried. RIP Martyn.

Never G V far to posh for us. Did play a while at Brymbo Steel. Not sure that hospital was part of the mental hospital as a relative of mine had his tonsils removed there and he was sound of mind

I did play football once at the Denbigh Hospital ground which was down a lane below the castle. I think The Mental hospital team played in one of the coast based Welsh leagues.

Didn't wan't to be controversial but wasn't happy at Garden Village . Some great people like Geoff Roberts but others too far up their own arses to tolerate. Loved Norman Road with Bob Williams and his brother , and my John Davies and Co Accountancy mentor John Corrin who was a good player and such a nice bloke. Last heard of working in Birmingham and watching Villa.
Found my spiritual home back in Jackoland. Not great at Doubles but , recognising my physical limitations ....short , skinny , not powerful , wearing glasses , realised my game relied on a determined Singles tactical , intelligent , grounded , speed and stamina outlook. Took Don Budge' s ( first man to complete the Grand Slam ) autobiography as my inspiration . First game at Rhos was against reigning champion Bev Thomas , brother of Lib MP later Lord Thomas. Beat him in three sets. Went on to win Llanerch Men's Singles title that year and for the next 5 years. Six years Champion .......Happy Days !!!!

Watched Martyn King play in the Cheshire League for Wrexham and I think he must have been a confidence player because he did not have a great game. Good ball control but missed several good chances.
I played at Denbigh Hospital for Prestatyn Reserves as I was making my way. Nice pitch I seem to remember but surroundings a bit odd. Denbigh hospital were in one of the North Wales leagues.
