You asked for viable alternatives, I listed some.
We will only know how successful any of them are once they happen. Nothing is guaranteed but it is clear the current set up is failing, the fanbase is fracturing and change needs to happen.

I can see it now end of the month a winger who has been on trial without a club since last season 2 stone overweight signs and Akil Wright fit Keates quoting having Akil back is like another signing we're fit to go obviously I would of liked to sign more players but it's hard to attract quality when in a relegation fight January is a difficult month to sign players.
