This joint quote is from August 2006 , things have changed in offsetting opportunities since then.

This quote from the joint document is from 2006 , things have changed in offsetting opportunities since then. Not that accurate after all.

I blame over population

The average human exhales about 2.3 pounds of carbon dioxide on an average day. (The exact quantity depends on your activity level—a person engaged in vigorous exercise produces up to eight times as much CO2 as his sedentary brethren.)

Of course....great opportunities to fly royals around the world in a private jet but that's okay and acceptable because rich old Elton paid carbon offset.....

Clearly the answer to climate change.

About your Offset

WWF endorses the Gold Standard for carbon offsets in the energy sector. Gold Standard projects are high-quality initiatives that make investments in clean energy or efficient production and also contribute to the sustainable development of the countries in which they are hosted.

From World Wildlife Fund.
I'd still like to know what you see as a scam.
Ryanair claim to be Europes lowest emissions airline, who offset flights. It's been calculated that to offset all it's emissions alone, 12% of the UK land mass would need to be planted with trees, in a year they managed a measily 7 football pitches.

I find it odd you can't grasp we need to use less, we can't keep doing as we are right now. Offsetting is not the answer, it's frankly a load of bull.

One final and the most important point, the emissions from a flight can remain in the atmosphere for hundreds of years damaging the climate. We aren't just talking Co2 here either, other far more damaging gasses are released which cannot be absorbed by trees. If they are like nitrogen very bad for them in high quantities just as it for coral reefs eventually killing them off. So any trees planted to offset get killed by the emissions that get 'offset'.

It might be a good idea if it was a compulsory element of every air fare.
Air Passenger Duty APD paid by every passenger on every flight originating at a UK airport was introduced as a "green tax" but just gets swallowed up with all the other taxes.
Nonetheless it is a compulsory element so anything voluntary on top is down to the individual.
