Lyons also scored our first Div 2 goal at home as well - a penalty in the pouring rain in a 1-2 defeat to Cardiff.

I liked Vinter though, as said, he got more criticism than he deserved. Always put a shift in despite the criticism he sometimes received. RIP.

Heady days indeed - that home defeat to Cardiff was shown on TV highlights - I remember watching it from the wooden bench seats of the old Mold Road stand - I can't recall a game where it rained heavier and longer - Eddie Nid in goal for us that day.

Going back to John Lyons - I also recall a home match very near to Christmas around that time v West Ham United - just after half time he blasted one of his trade mark penalties into the roof of the net in front of the kop to put us 4 - 1 up - couldn't believe it at the time, us beating WHU by such a scoreline - mind you Bryan 'Pop' Robson scored two late goals to make the last few minutes 'big twitchy bum time' but we held out to win 4 - 3 - great times and good entertaining players.

The game I was referring to was the infamous game where Alvin Martin and Alan Devonshire squared up to each other. I seem to remember it was the first game of a season and MV nipped in to score the winner.

Perhaps not our first on Division 2 then?

First match in the old second division was 78 / 79 season played on 19/08/78 v Brighton & Hove Albion which ended 0 - 0 attendance 14,081.

The game you are referring to was the following 79 / 80 season played on 18/08/79 v West Ham United which ended 1 - 0 attendance 13,036.

Very difficult to believe it was all the best part of 40 years ago when we were mixing it with the 'big boys'.

Good player for us! Scored two goals in Everton FA Cup defeat. A Welsh friend from Wirral and I were there that game, thanks to me obtaining tickets beforehand on request via Mark Higgins, the Everton captain on that day!

Daily Post headline for the opening game of the 79-80 season was 'Dalglish vintage - from Vinter' (clever pun from Bob Whiting!!) Opening paragraph read 'West Ham sailed in with all the elegance of the tall ships. They limped home bedraggled as a Fastnet fleet'
Eddie Niedzwicki and Joey also produced superb performances.

Memory not what it was but was the goal in the 1-0, the one where Phil Parkes (the keeper) and Billy bond took each other out leaving Vinter to walk the ball into the empty net in front of a packed tech end away following?

Possibly the only player to score a hat trick on his last game for us.

Sad news.

Spot on, lloydyp - so your memory is still doing quite well! It was a very happy trip back to the Junction that day and straight to The Maelgwyn.
