Re: Do we need an Investor?
To answer the initial question and thread title, almost certainly yes we do.

Re: Do we need an Investor?
No... no its not different. We are a football club are we not ? If the steady decline on the field is not halted and reversed, the coffers will relect that decline. Aa business does not survive by being debt free. The misunderstanding around this shows we have the wrong people at the helm supported by the equally business ignorant.

But, we aren't your regular business. We are a football club and football is therefore our main product. If that product fails then income will suffer, and money available for the first team will drop...usually follows that we can't get the better players, so we fall in standard again, and attendances and income drops...and so on. Unless we suddenly get lucky with EVERYTHING (manager, players, rub of the green) it will be extremely hard to obtain promotion under the current model. Money in from an outside source would be a logical solution, adding more backing to a first team promotion push, whether from a benefactor, investor.... whatever. No one is suggesting we immediately open our arms to the next person who toddles along with an apparent 'open wallet', obviously the proper diligence will need to be done. BUT IMO, unless we look at changing the model and evolving, this club is heading in one direction... |

I agree with you on the financial side of things for a collection of volunteers they are doing a good job of keeping the club going. The on pitch side of things they are just a complete disaster area. I always keep going back to them but we need to emulate what Lincoln did. Get a young highly rated up and coming manager with a proven track record in and give them control over the backroom i.e a choice on if they want Darlington involved. Second find some kind investment boost into the club be it donation, investor or share scheme that will allow a modest spending boost to the coffers. When Lincoln went up the initial put in was about 300K. With our fan base an amount like that should be do able. For any of this to happen though several of the board have to go in the summer to be replaced by people who can buy into the above and we need some modern football experience on the board. |

I hope our 'football fortune' revisits us soon, otherwise your remarks will come back to haunt us all; for they do not fully reflect how and why we are in our current financial predicament: which is better than some, yet probably not good enough to attain our goal of promotion back into the FL.

To date we have been able to run the club within our means financially but based on the drop away in attendance due to the enormous struggle on the pitch we won't be able to continue to do so. That is the white elephant in the room. Yes, I agree it's a no brainer that a financial gift is better than investment. But where is the man, boy or girl willing to gift the club £5M ? Any investor is going to be subject to extreme scrutiny. We all benefit from our history and experience. Nobody is ever going to get away with doing a H&G again. Or equally an M&R. Part of that is because the WST own and control the club. The other part is we don't have any of those assets anymore as M&R decided to split them from the club and sell them to G for their own personal profit. H&G and M&R were not investors. They were asset strippers. Its a very different thing.

Whilst were on the subject of memory, it seems that you and your lot have forgotten what a professional football club is about, which would be fine if it wasn't for the rest of us who haven't having to suffer as a result.
