Re: On Demand. Blyth Spartans.
The first match was featured on Match of the Day.
Alas I can't do links but it's available on youtube. Amazing crowd scenes showing a packed kop when the Pigeon loft stand still existed, as the teams ran out of the tunnel onto the pitch. Don't you just love strong winds that blow over corner flag poles ? |

Re: On Demand. Blyth Spartans.
Treasured memories with my Dad standing on the terraces at Cae Ras, remember the corner flag incident well as we were in the paddock in front of the old timber stand on Mold Road....Les Cartwright I think it was that took the corner that got us back level?....right in front of the Geordies on the Tech End......can you imagine teams playing on a rock hard frozen pitch like that now.....different world then and a better one in many ways!

Re: On Demand. Blyth Spartans.
its interesting watching that again.
amazing what 42 years can do. it was so tricky on that frozen sandy pitch (a real leveller) and I think we came out the first half with the wrong boot studs on and had to change at half time. having said that it makes me realise (as if i needed reminding) what an incredible team we were. The pace and quick thinking between them was a joy to watch again. Arfon told me that "we played with no fear and were confident we would beat anyone, no matter who the opposition were, Liverpool or Newcastle or Arsenal" You could see that confidence in the faces and in the positivity of the team. What a team. We will never see the like again. Thanks for putting that link up.

Re: On Demand. Blyth Spartans.
I just remember Blythe Spartans being a horrible, dirty team. Yes, we were lucky. Lucky to have any uninjured players left on the pitch

Re: On Demand. Blyth Spartans.
I had been working in Newcastle in the late 60's so enjoyed the Newcastle match (2:2) in the fourth round with my old friends in a crowd of 28,425.
The Blyth replay was totally different, really intimidating, with a passionate crowd of 42,267. I was glad to get away from the ground in the end and didn't even stop for a beer in the town. It was a very hard game as what Blyth lacked in skill they made up for with aggression. We deserved the win and the chance to play Arsenal in the next round. |
