Default Lee Trundle

Great piece from the "i"

https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/l...-messi-2527498

Brought back memories of some of the goals he scored for us.
The goal clips in the article are well worth watching.

You need to read it now so you can tell us what he said about us.

I can't imagine it would take long to read

2 chapters worth out of 19!

skimming through, highlights include:
  • Joey scouted him whilst he was at Rhyl after arranging a mid season friendly against them - he scored a hat trick against us
  • Stan Boardman was also at the game and recommended him to Tranmere, but we beat them to his signature
  • his first goal was an overhead kick in a 3-2 win at Rotherham
  • he asked for a raise after his first full season started, he was on about £500 a week at the time
  • Gary Neville took the piss out of him for carrying some lumber in the Man U testimonial for Bryan and Kevin Reeves and that spurred his career on
  • Some lucky Wrexham lass had a quickie with him behind a nightclub in town, and the coppers saw it all on CCTV
  • a Wrexham fan gave him free driving lessons as he couldnt drive - he binned him off one night for a night with a future Miss Wales
  • not long after he had a crash on Runcorn Bridge, with Dan Bennett in the back seat
  • he got a few lads from his local youth team deals at Wrexham - Joe Feeney, Frankie Lacken and Mark Duffy - who ended up at Morecambe
  • he got done over by a crazy girl who threatened to ruin his career over a rape allegation, even though it was consensual. he got arrested for it, and the club backed him through it
  • she withdrew the allegation after the last game of our promotion season
  • he loved his time at the club, the team, the commute and the town
  • money was the only reason he left, which we couldnt meet due to financial restrictions
  • very complimentary on a lot of the players at Wrexham at the time he was there, and both Flynn and Smith
  • Flynn had tapped him up before end of the season for Swansea, with the deal dependent on staying in the football league - needing to beat Hull on the final game of the season - as he celebrated the promotion, he asked a steward how swansea had got on....

I recall a League Cup home tie v Everton - there were rumours around the time that Everton were interested in signing him.
We went 0 - 1 down in the first half to a Kevin Campbell strike at the Tech End.

Second half we pressed Everton very hard for an equaliser - the closest we came was a thunderbolt of a shot from about 30 yards by Trundle that hit the bar - if only that had gone in.

Alas the game will be remembered for something entirely different - Wayne Rooney came on as a very late sub and scored his first ever two goals, the game finished 0 - 3.

Trundle had magic feet and close control - still say his overhead kick after controlling the ball on his chest with back to goal at Walsall would take some beating - mainly because I was right behind the net in the away stand at the Bescott (the game we were 2 - 0 down and came back to win 2 - 3).

Lee was a bit like a modern day Robin Friday.

My pal Paolo wrote the book with Paul McGuigan (oasis)

'The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw'

It's a great book.

I read the Robin Friday book a few months ago and can confirm its a great read. Hadn't even heard of him before the book.
