Re: Season Suspended until April 3rd

Scrap relegation and have those in automatic spaces go up next year from every league. This won't clear until late summer at the earliest.

Perhaps send another up from this league to make up for the gulf in Bury.

Liverpool can have a title with an asterisk.

There is no way you can start one season without finishing one first. Any other solution but playing the remaining games will drag through the courts for years. Wait till it is safe to do so, finish this season then make a decision on whether next season needs to be shortened but at least that is known upfront

In 1939 the season was 3 games in when the rug was pulled under very different circumstances. Later football was then restructured in a regional form with Wrexham placed in the Wartime western section. looking at the records the town did well against N West giants Everton, ManCity Man United etc.

They did so well we won it!

We did have a lot of top-flight players playing for us who were in the mob locally.

What if we get to November, for example, and it has not gone? It cannot be done then surely as you would be starting the following season in February at the earliest. Add to that the fact promoted teams would have like 1 week to make transfers suitable to their aims of being successful in the league above.

Obviously the ideal is that games can resume much earlier. I am talking about a scenario where this is not possible.

Absolutely not. By the time all the coronavirus abates to allow life including football to resume normal life we will be well into the summer I expect. The best solution would be to abandon this season completely and have no promotion and relegation . Start again in August . Yes there will be huge financial implications as clubs seek to recover contracted money due to them but no different to any other business effected by the pandemic.
One good thing might come out of all of this . Phil and his henchmen now have no reason to continue with their crusade this year. We are safe from relegation and the vast majority of the fans he wanted to bring on board are now more interested in on line betting on the horse racing and buying excessive amounts of loo paper.

We will be stuck with it now - just like flu.

It is likely to blow up every winter just like flu - something society will have to get use to - its not going to go away anytime soon is it ?
What will happen ? suspend football every winter ?
Vaccines already being started in USA.

History repeating itself in a different form - what did they do in 1919 I wonder when millions died of flu just after four years of conflict.

fluffysheepsupporter 17th March 2020 10.22:46

Re: Season Suspended until April 3rd

On the subject of vaccines I have a feeling that we will see something emerging which is available much earlier than the end of year predictions of the scientists. There is huge money to be made in developing one soon and marketing it . Governments may be happy to shorten trial periods to save lives and so they should be. We are already hearing rumours that the US man who wanted us to use the flu jab to get rid has been offering German scientists vast sums to lure them across the Atlantic and corner the market. Apparently mice have been tested on a potential vaccine and it worked . Human trials could be just round the corner.

I still say priority is to finish the season you started. If that then means a future season needs to be shortened then so be it but at least everyone would understand the rules before a ball was kicked.

In your situation of restarting it actually Throws up a potential solution. Finish the season in November, play the Euro’s December which is 12 months prior to the winter World Cup so you fit a full season in between. The adjustment of a short season then happens after the World Cup to get us back into the usual winter schedule

I hugely disagree with you. If you don’t finish this season it will drag through the courts for years. Leeds and West Brom May pursue Lost PL revenue, Leicester lost CL revenue, Man U lost potential CL revenue, Sheff Utd denied what may be a once in a life time chance at Europe. barrow pursue lost revenue from promotion. It goes on forever
Think about it. Everton fans still go on 35 years ago about Hysel costing their club massively, you think clubs around the world won’t also bemoan this season not ending??

Scrapping this season to start another just says that next season is more important than this one which it isn’t

It is right to stop football for as long as it takes to keep as many people healthy as possible l. You the finish the season and make any necessary adjustments to future seasons.

All the club's involved with promotion relegation will have to grin and bare it. They will have no chance of compensation because it's a global event that threatens lives. And health and safety of the population comes before any game of football.

Haruki 17th March 2020 13.21:38

Re: Season Suspended until April 3rd

Agree totally that public health comes before football but that is not the discussion we are having.
Putting next season before this one which is 75% complete is a conscious decision that would be made by football authorities and as it is unfair it would be challenged in the courts.

Just decide it now on PPG. (we are safe with that, yeah?)

Highest ranked team in playoffs goes up.

Easy.

You have to finish the season with all the games being played. Even if they are played behind closed doors. Anything other than this would result in a huge web of legal challenges and complications that are not necessary. We might just have to wait a while for that to happen. Until then no football. Its simple.

You can't just snatch titles and promotions away from teams this far into the season, it wouldn't be right even though watching Liverpool fans have a meltdown would be entertaining, it would just be plain wrong. Imagine if we were winning the league by some distance and that got taken away from us. We'd all be furious and rightly so.

Insurance companies will try any old excuse to wiggle out of paying.

IMHO I think they are going to have to play the last games behind closed doors. The alternative is going to be a protracted mess in the courts

Another idea is to start next season with all clubs in the same division as now and same points as now. clubs on highest points at end of season in 2022 get promoted or relegated with no play offs just for that season.

The perception reminds me of the start of World War 1 (not that I was there to recall it).

'It will all be over very soon - you'll all be back home from France by christmas'.

Four years later in 1918 with millions dead the fighting ended.

This current situation has barely started - it's new and we are entering the unknown, some are claiming we will be with it until spring 2021 - other suggestions are that similar to flu it will blow up every winter from hereon.
The system doesn't know how to respond and is learning fast - eventually we will just have to get on with life by which time vaccines will probably be widely available for the vulnerable.

Interesting times but it wont go away any time soon and probably never.

Its a 12’week lockdown not 12 months

And even if it was 12 months you would just finish this season after the lock and effectively miss a whole season so yes you would get promotion and relegation
