Not going to rewrite history and pretend it was best we parted ways when we did. However, when you look at his track record, when you hear how clued up about non league football he is, how's he's kept the ball rolling before, and how a break does us all good, then as was said at the time by a few who know their onions, he ticked an awful lot of boxes after Rickets left. As did Askey. And they were both available.

So, what goes through someone's mind to prefer someone who has been managing beach soccer for a few years or even worse, someone who has been running a foot golf centre, at such a key time in our history? What could have been.

Anyway, wish him well for more reasons than one.

Vale fans I speak to are pleased with John Askey aswell,,turned them around in to a top half side

Anyone who thinks what he did in “keeping it rolling” for basically 18 months was easy needs to look at what has happened since when managers have left us in good positions.

His big transfers of his mates let him down but he was in charge of 36 games in the season Saunders left. That was his season, not Saunders. The following season we were consistent as hell too despite losing Creighton all season.

Also huge budget cuts were happening from the moment he took over. He had a good group to work with for 18 months but lack of money and poor transfers let him down. Bishop and Ormerod were expensive disaster signings overall.

Would he come back after some stabbed him in the back? That includes our current manager, player power was allowed to grow during that time.

Andy Morrell made one of the worst signings by bringing in Dele Adebola to fire us to promotion, the man could hardly run.

But would you have said that about Brett if he had tucked that away against Newport at Wembley. He knows he should, we know he should, we have suffered another 7 years of absolute misery since and getting worse. By the way who layed that on for Brett?

Still drool about that goal against Brighton in the cup, at the Racecourse from Andy

No, the worse signing was by Saunders, remember that right back that started the match and took up off half time never to be seen again, can't remember his name that God. Don't think he had seen a ball before.

Good for Wrexham as manager at the time and at least he tried to play football. The problem was when he had to get his own players in he lacked contacts so had to resort to buying in people he played with such as Brett Ormerod/Andy Bishop or players well past there best such as Dele Adebola. I wish him all the best in his new job. Top bloke!

Hasn't he applied for the job on a couple of occasions?

Would have been my choice....

Yep, playing decent stuff by all accounts as well. So you've got options of Morrell and Askey and you go for Lawrence then Hughes. I mean seriously, what type of people would do that?
