I'm absolutely behind recruiting quality from lower divisions, it makes absolute sense but where it trips up for us is that, as players move up levels, you'd think that the level of coaching would also improve to help push these players beyond the level they are when they come into the club.

The problem, is that in a huge amount of players over the last few years, players have regressed, rather than progressed. It's a scary trend and it doesn't offer much hope when lower league potential comes in.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the idea of bringing in players from lower down, coaching them more than what they were a league or 2 lower, with the idea of turning a profit on them or better still, holding on to them and going up with them but the amount of players over the last 5 years or so who have looked better than when they came in is miniscule. There doesn't seem to be any sort of acknowledgement either from the board about it.

I asked in the AGM if the youth sides are set up in the same way as the 1st team in order for a smoother transition into the first team as they would understand the system and roles expected of them but there was nothing to suggest this was the case.

Southampton for example have something like this in place, their young players are constantly coming through into the 1st team. The Aston Villa youth teams are generally set up to play the same as the 1st team.

We have needed that sort of long term thinking in place but there is no consistency. When Hughes was appointed, there was talk of more expansive football, scoring more goals etc, then the replacement comes in with a nick a goal 1-0 mentality. This dour brand of football was known to be how Keates had his sides play. It offers little entertainment and resulted in many draws previously when the fans were calling out for some attacking football and where draws weren't enough. The appointment showed no consistent plan and merely a hope to grind out safety for the next season.

If we're going to persist with the CB's lumping it up to the CF then we're going to need a proper target man next season. Not expecting players in the Hoooper/Grant mould to try and do it.

If we're going the shite but effective football route, so be it, but we need to build a full squad to play that easy, not just a mish-mash of players who don't combine as a unit.

I realise many on here won’t like it but we just might do so. People can complain till the cows come home about Keates football and the board but faced with the reality of not seeing football I wonder ? As has been said before - the silent majority simply want to watch their team and our average has been way above that number for a long time so we might just see a mad rush for ST.

Personally I and many others won't be anywhere near it, but I tend to agree with your point.

The "mad rush" might just take place after last seasons ST holders have a claimed a seat. If 2000 of them take up their options, that leaves roughly 350 spaces for the "casual" supporter.
Realistically, i think thats how how it will turn out. The silent majority are pissed off at the state of the team and the club, but just havent got the fire in their bellies to join the Trust and fight for change. I really do hope that we do well in the first 10 games, or we may struggle to sell the following 10 match STs.
Following the AGM and SGM, its going to be nigh impossible to influence "my club", when the common man has to achieve 66% in order to pass a resolution, whilst the Board only need 50%. Then again, who would want to put themselves up to be part of such an unfair, corrupt regime?

I wonder will spencer and the other WST overlords only get to see 10 games this season? I doubt it somehow.

Of course is he, I mean he's got years of success here to justify a new contract. Look at all the players who have flourished under him, why wouldn't you keep him?

It'll only be a matter of time before Klopp comes knocking.

Its basic stuff and we cannot get it right at any level and that is why we are regressing at such an alarming rate.

The last front man I remember who could hold the ball up well on the ground or in the air was James Gray. Since then we have had god knows how many strikers and they have all in the main failed due to how we play. I mean FFS we had Grant as a target man

This season will be no different. We will buy a striker or two completely unsuited to be a target man and just pump balls to them all match from the back leaving them totally isolated. They will either get dropped or go out on loan and we will dip into the loan market.

The only hope is we could get Ponticelli in on loan for the season with another striker supporting but if my Cov friend is right there are several clubs looking at him at the moment.
