Re: Youth
Can't think of anything particularly appealing as a reason to sign for this club, regardless of age - the only 'get out' will be there will be a massive number of players surplus to requirements any time soon - squads, I predict will be cut back to the bare bones to make ends meet - with nobody having a concrete date to work to when the National League will resume then what will clubs realistically do to survive ? Said it before, managers live and die by their results - they need a squad of players ready to deliver 'now' not to be developed in the hope they come good in 2 - 3 years time. Didn't Gary Mills say as much when he was here ? what would you do if you were manager ? put funds into youth development or throw the kitchen sink on producing the best first team squad possible to generate instant success - the days of bringing on youth and playing them in the reserves in a league system are long gone - perhaps the massive influx of players from overseas has also had a detrimental effect to home grown youth prospects whose opportunities are far less now than they were 20 years ago.
There will be numerous seasoned experienced pro's available when eventually National League football returns crying out for a club to take them on that youth players are even more likely to be released. The only ones retained will have to demonstrate exceptional ability - and if they did that at Wrexham they would be snapped up by a bigger fish before they had learnt to properly tie their boot laces. I feel sorry for young people full stop - footballers or not - life I think is going to be pretty hard for this particular generation and seems to be getting harder by the day. |

Re: Youth
youth... its crazy, its the only real way we have of improving off our own steam, and makin a profit, get a couple of seasons out of a prospect, he improves us then if the right offer comes we sell, thats how it works or used to, its a tried and tested formula.....not here tho , a local lad always gets the crowd goin ffs

Re: Youth
We find ourselves trapped in this vicious cycle of producing players who aren't good enough for the first team, yet manage to sign even worse ones on what you'd assume was bigger money.
Was Doug Tharme good enough? Possibly not. Is he better than Jazzi Barnum Boob? Absolutely. |

Re: Youth
But there is no competitive reserve league to bring youth prospects on and get them playing regularly against men.
Same with long term injury casualties. A player will go from training to being thrown straight into the cauldron - most don't appear up for it but is it any wonder. Judging a youth player on the very occasional Scottish Tennants Cup tie against other similar weak second choice teams is never going to work - they need to be playing on a regular basis but it has no way of happening. No doubt funding as ever will be a massive issue - and it's going to get a lot worse from now on. |
