It was all about Fergie in those years, he ran the show on the pitch and around the club, the manager in waiting and he expected to take over even before Smith was fired. The moment Ferguson left we were ultimately doomed and so it transpired.

A member of 'The Lager Club clique' stated during a Wrexham FC feature on Soccer Night, a HTV Wales programme presented by Jonny Owens during the mid-2000s, that it was 'rooster's turn to be manager' if and when Denis Smith stepped down. Peter Jones was present during the broadcasting of that programme which came direct from the lager club and he may indeed have made that very utterance!

I loved watching him play. Nobody has came close in the middle of the park since.

That night was magical - vintage Wrexham what a game !

However I have fond memories of the Bescott Stadium around that time - trailing at HT 2 - 0.
Then a second half comeback with Trundle controlling the ball on his chest with back to goal and scoring an overhead kick 0 brilliant goal - Craig Falconbridge got a last minute winner in front of the away fans to send us into orbit.

Trundle had magic in his boots - well balanced and full of skill - the time we played Everton in the League Cup and eventually lost 0 - 3 he hit the bar with a long range thunderbolt of a free kick - supposedly Everton were about to sign him but didn't in the end - he looked like he could cope at any level with that level of skill - always wondered why Everton didn't follow it up with a concrete bid
