Re: Alan Jarvis
I was in Grove Park in the same year as Alan in 1960-61.He used to play for the school team on Saturday mornings and was then picked up to play for Everton Reserves in the afternoon. As his school team took precedent he only played in away matches if they were in the north- west.
Alan left Grove Park in 1961 to join Everton permanently who also helped him train as a Quantity Surveyor At that time Everton were known as the 'Millionaire's Club' and when they signed Scottish international Jimmy Gabriel, Alan's had little chance of progressing and he signed for Hull City and finished his career at Mansfield. He continued in his profession as a Q.S. and attended a number of Grove Park Old Boys Reunions including some of the later Golf Matches - he played off a single figure handicap. However in the last few years his dementia became more serious and he had to live in a care home, and died last December As stated at his inquest, this was largely caused by heading a football. A sad loss of a close acquaintance and a great character |

Re: Alan Jarvis
I knew Alan well from Grove Park. During the hard winter of 1962/63 when there was no football, Alan, Peter Clark, GVLTC and myself often used to play table tennis on Saturdays in the YMCA Building then Ministry of Labour in Hill Street. Alan's time at Everton was in the era of no substitutes. George Sharples and Alan would frequently line up as 'reserves' to travel with that star studded team. Adding to Glossopred, Alan was selected for the Welsh amateur team at 16 and listed as playing for Grove Park GS, a school team that also included Terry Hennessey, Ray Gilpin and Bill Maddocks, all then Welsh schoolboy internationals.

And there was a junior teacher called Jarvis, but not convinced he was Alan's dad. I also lived in tanyfron for a few years and my mum was friendly with his mum who also lived there. I think his dad was called Matt and had been a professional footballer with hull in his day. It was a long time ago and no doubt someone else knows. There is a photo of alan and terry Hennessey somewhere as grove park boys representing Wales. |
