Between seasons he would come for a kick round with the local lads on Stansty Park.
Nice guy.

I knew Alan well from Grove Park. During the hard winter of 1962/63 when there was no football, Alan, Peter Clark, GVLTC and myself often used to play table tennis on Saturdays in the YMCA Building then Ministry of Labour in Hill Street. Alan's time at Everton was in the era of no substitutes. George Sharples and Alan would frequently line up as 'reserves' to travel with that star studded team. Adding to Glossopred, Alan was selected for the Welsh amateur team at 16 and listed as playing for Grove Park GS, a school team that also included Terry Hennessey, Ray Gilpin and Bill Maddocks, all then Welsh schoolboy internationals.

However, I did play against Alan Jarvis, when I was at Llangollen Grammar School and he at Grove Park. I recall, with embarrassment to this day, how he beat me with the slightest swivel of his hip and was past me in a flash.

RIP, Alan

Was Glyn James who I think played for blackpool that was on fringe of welsh squad in same era...won similar number of caps...wasnt he from llangollen ...did he attend dinas bran or was it llangollen county school then..

Not sure about this. I was at Vicky from 1955 to 1960 !
And there was a junior teacher called Jarvis, but not convinced he was Alan's dad.
I also lived in tanyfron for a few years and my mum was friendly with his mum who also lived there. I think his dad was called Matt and had been a professional footballer with hull in his day. It was a long time ago and no doubt someone else knows. There is a photo of alan and terry Hennessey somewhere as grove park boys representing Wales.

That was BRIAN Jarvis who played for Wrexham from 1953-58
He scored 3 goals in 5 years, 2 of which came in a 4-4 draw with Oldham after we were 0-4 down at half time !!!

Alan was a star at Grove Park yet always had time for us lesser mortals.I saw him play for Wales Youth v Ireland at the Racecourse and also travelled to Cardiff ,just after the Aberfan disaster in 1966,to see him make his debut for Wales against Scotland.Terry Hennessey ex GP also played.I bumped into Alan in a pub car park at Stone,Staffs when on my way to see Wrexham at,I think,Nott's County. He was with the Mansfield team on their way to play Chester.
Another memory is of him playing for Mansfield at the Racecourse and making, shall we say,a particularly robust challenge on Arfon Griffiths.
RIP Alan,a boyhood hero and a great guy.

Alan's dad was a teacher in Victoria Junior School and lived on Rhosddu Road opposite the Walnut Pub. He was a really nice bloke and was so proud of Alan. He would train the Victoria School Football team and made a very good job of it.
