Cannot understand people being surprised by this. It isn't even specific to football, new management or the threat of you losing your job makes your try harder.

Football is all about results and last night was a great result, but the football was poor and like a tennis match going back and forth. My wife said to me "it's no good shouting at the tele you are not going to get the football you want in this league".

They all know their jobs aren’t safe and a much higher standard of expectation is upon them.
