McLaren committed suicide at the age of 29. Apparently could not come to terms with being released from Port Vale. Perhaps food for thought for those willing to abuse players and management over a game of football being lost or not providing enough entertainment.

I have often wondered why our own John Lyons also took his own life.

A friend of my sister went out with John. Appeared to be a decent young lad. Killed himself hours after playing for Colchester Utd at the age of 26.

Used to visit his mum up to when she passed about 10 years ago lovely old lady.
She kept his bedroom like he was still with us, all his cups and medals on display.
Seemed to remember him coming on as a late sub and quite often scoring, probably be our star striker if he was here today.
