![]() For me it was a time when TV, if you had one, was fuzzy black and white with 2 channels. The washing was rung out on a mangle. Collars could be starched at Soo Kens in Brook Street and chips were 3p a bag ! At Christmas you could bid for a Turkey or Goose at a feather auction off Queens St but you had to pluck it yourself.
As for football. Some of the team were part timers but were lions compared to the apologies that wear the shirt today. The club was run by volunteers who also ran their own businesses. They were not self publicists but and even then took some stick when the team didn't perform well. However some were a different class when it came to keeping the club on the straight and narrow. As a young fan you might be lucky enough to have a rattle scarf and bobble hat but certainly no replica rip off shirts to tempt you ----Happy days eh! Oh, as for the chips ---- they could be bulked up with free scratching at Turners in Abbott Street. Last edited by Inside Left; 8th February 2021 at 12.32:27.. |

![]() 1965 - same time as Albert signed. Had been a few times previously as older pupils in St David’s were given free tickets to the Bushfield Stand with instructions to make as much noise as possible - we were bottom of Division 4.

![]() I went to the Roma game in Nov 1984 and had either been the season before or next season to Halifax at home. It wasn't until the 1986/87 season that I started going with my mates to pretty much every home game. Hooked. Funnily enough years later and when in non league, I started seeing old school mates at the games with their kids and partners who had never shown any interest back in the day, that I was aware of and you could nearly count the people at some games back in the 80's...
I think there is more pent up interest than at any time since the early 90's promotion season, I still believe that even at this level, if we were flying from the off, we would be having lockouts before the season ended. Last edited by Always The Kop; 8th February 2021 at 12.52:18.. |
