I agree. Like many things in life the truth is usually found somewhere in the middle. Between the extremes.
The loud but essentially small number of anti Trust extremists will never accept that the trust did inherit a basket case of a club and through its members (thousands of them) and scores of hardworking volunteers brought it back from the brink and sustained it. But sadly couldn’t achieve success on the pitch. Which is ultimately what it’s all about. It most definitely was not a political project as some bizarrely claim. It contained people from all walks of life and no doubt many different political persuasions. There were a very small number who wanted fan ownership at any price. But these extremists had very little influence in reality.
It also made some bad mistakes along the way, continually fell down on communications and couldn’t attract enough high quality leaders with the time and skills to challenge or replace the small group who essentially ran the club. No doubt at great personal cost in terms of the time they put in and the flak they took but succession planning was never properly carried out and the Americans have come along at just the right time in so many ways. They too will make mistakes but eventually their money will achieve things the trust couldn’t even dream of and I wish them luck.
It is right though to thank everyone who tried to make fan ownership work and ensure that the club survived in what ever way. Thousands contributed over the years and they can take pride in being able to decide, democratically, to pass on their debt free club to new custodians. Lets hope that faith in R and R is well placed. I suspect it is.
I’m too old to worry but the younger generation should still have one eye on the future and what happens when the new owners move on as one day they surely will. Hopefully with us well established back in the football league which we graced for so long.
