I can see an element of truth to him showing an interest in the position when dealing with our new owners, his ego would mean he couldn't help himself,

If as has been stated by ATK , a firm of headhunters has been handling the appointment , then you don't apply do you , they go out and hunt for a person of a certain type for R&R , it won't be Harris .
