That was great. However not enough overloads for me.

Those defenders need to learn to stay on their feet. VAR would have a field day

One of the things that stands out though is how quickly the keeper kicks the ball. Takes an age to restart the game these days - with Lainton being particularly bad for it.

I think back then the rules were that a gk could only bounce the ball if he wanted to move with it , allied to the shoulder charge rule which was still in use , then if you were a keeper you probably wanted to get rid of the ball ASAP !

Interesting to see Tommy Bannan who was a good player for the town. Another player who was a miner, came from Scotland, also worked in our coalfield and played semi pro. So many like him in the 1950's 60's. How would the cosseted players today have managed?

Glyn Hughes of Llay ex-Sheffield Wednesday was a good all round local sportsman including cricket and later bowls. A fine winger, he had the beating of most left backs in Division 3 North, except the great George Hardwick, player manager of Oldham Athletic. Tommy Bannan like many sportsmen at that time chose a mining career to avoid national service!
