It often helps businesses to get someone with no knowledge to come in and ask the all important question... Why? If the business can then explain exactly why they do something, then they are on the right track. If they can't, or simply answer "Er, because..." or "It's always done that way..", then it's time to find something new. No business prospers without serious re-evaluation, self-criticism and innovation.
The best starter for this is often someone who has not spent years in the stagnant business.

The chef and actor metaphors are good ones. I've watched enough football to know whether something is good or not in the same way as I've watched enough films and eaten enough meals but I don't feel I need to have played or coached to reach these opinions in the same way as I've never cooked or acted.

I played for Wrexham in the nineties. Spent a fair bit of time on the bench admittedly but was successful coming off it!

I know enough about football to know I don’t know that much, I fear that some haven’t reached that level of knowledge as yet.

The reason I ask is there are a lot of opinions on here particularly about Keates, and in life it’s important to listen to people’s opinions, however, it’s choosing the right opinions to follow.

In my admittedly pretty unknowledgeable situation I don’t recognise some of the metaphors for how the team has been playing.

Can anyone assist? Your footy CV highlights would be useful in deciding to listen and learn from you.

Cheers
I was once scouted by Cliff Sear, Keates is useless so close thread.

Nah.

This thread will go down as a RP great.

RP Gold doesn't come close.

I had a few conversations with Kevin Russell about Keates both as a player and a manager.

Admittedly those two are friends, but he always maintained Keates would make a good manager and that after becoming one he had performed better than many in the game expected with the teams he was able to put together on the budget he was given at Wrexham, balancing the size of the overall squad with the talent and experience the budget afforded him.

His view was Keates's style of play at Wrexham is dictated by the players he had to pick from rather than his philosophy on the game.

Russell also disliked the trust - never sure if it was the ownership model itself or the people involved - but he never had a good word to say about them and always said we would never get promoted while they were in charge, no matter who was manager.

I should also mention, he also once told me Omerod was a brilliant signing who would set the Racecourse alight, so having recent playing experience doesn't guarantee getting everything right.

Absolute cringe. Right up there with "player X does a better job than you could." which I've heard before now

I was involved with professional football but I like to keep my feet and opinions firmly grounded.

I though Dean Saunders had already decided the answer to the OP's question some time ago.
For those who can't remember, it was on the lines of "the fans know nothing about football"
We all know what we'd like to see and think we know how to achieve our goals but ultimately it's down to resources, the talent (or lack of) available, a good manager / coach and that bit of luck, often created by maximum effort.
