As Wilkin said in his podcast he was limited in his budget by some of the salaries of the experienced players he inherited from the Saunders and Morrell days, probably why Gary Mills had a big clear our when he joined, so he could utilise more of the budget for the players he wanted to bring in.

You realise what the budget is when you sign up Massanka for a second spell when he was dog shit with us the first time around.Saying that we could say that about Dibble and Redmond.

  • 2012-2013 season (5th: Saunders, then Morrell): £1,303,347
  • 2013-2014 season (17th: Morrell): £1,073,917
  • 2014-2015 season (11th: Morrell, then Wilkin): £988,225
  • 2015-2016 season (8th: Wilkin, then Mills): £1,081,521
  • 2016-2017 season (13th: Mills, then Keates): £941,514
  • 2017-2018 season (10th: Keates): £1,071,663
  • 2018-2019 season (4th: Rickets, Barrow and Hughes): £937,400 (est.)
  • 2019-2020 season (20th: Hughes): £1,256,900 (est.)

What that shows is:
  1. Apart from 2012-2013 (Saunders/Morrell) and 2019-2020 (Hughes), all the managers had roughly the same to work with.
  2. Andy Morrell had a tough time with a plummetting budget and big players on big salaries.
  3. More budget doesn't get you promoted. Our best finish was with our lowest budget. Our worst finish was with our second-highest budget. If we didn't get promoted under the WST, it's not just because we didn't have the budget for it.
  4. Hughes did an absolutely terrible job with the money he was given.
Just checked the budgets against the Information Pack which the Trust circulated before the sale of the club.

The audited 'First Team Costs' for the years 2011/12 to 2017/18 are the same as you mention above.

The pack also outlines audited 'First Team Costs' for 2018/19 of £1,454,489 and £1,132,846 for 2019/20 (referred to as management)

Plus a 'Covid budget' for 2020/21 of 969,313.

Those figures for 2018/19 and 2019/20 are quite revealing.

What it says to me.

1. The playing budget has always been sufficient to make the play offs. Too many managers have failed and been let down by players, or undermined in the case of Wilkin.

2. Appointing Hughes was a massive error of judgement, the majority thought so at the time.

So was our budget of £969,313 for last season not a top 16 budget as Keates said. Many clubs in this division take less through gate receipts than what our commercial side makes in a year(past history)

Most clubs in this division don't rely on their gate receipts. Its hard to say really, I've certainly read reports for some clubs that suggest a far higher budget, but its hard to imagine other clubs being anywhere near that. id guess between 10-15th would be about right though.
