Default Budgets for different managers

After Andy Morrell's and Kevin Wilkin's podcasts, there has been lots of discussion about the relative budget for each manager. It's often forgotten that the WST published the budgets for each manager, so we know exactly what it was.
  • 2012-2013 season (5th: Saunders, then Morrell): £1,303,347
  • 2013-2014 season (17th: Morrell): £1,073,917
  • 2014-2015 season (11th: Morrell, then Wilkin): £988,225
  • 2015-2016 season (8th: Wilkin, then Mills): £1,081,521
  • 2016-2017 season (13th: Mills, then Keates): £941,514
  • 2017-2018 season (10th: Keates): £1,071,663
  • 2018-2019 season (4th: Rickets, Barrow and Hughes): £937,400 (est.)
  • 2019-2020 season (20th: Hughes): £1,256,900 (est.)

What that shows is:
  1. Apart from 2012-2013 (Saunders/Morrell) and 2019-2020 (Hughes), all the managers had roughly the same to work with.
  2. Andy Morrell had a tough time with a plummetting budget and big players on big salaries.
  3. More budget doesn't get you promoted. Our best finish was with our lowest budget. Our worst finish was with our second-highest budget. If we didn't get promoted under the WST, it's not just because we didn't have the budget for it.
  4. Hughes did an absolutely terrible job with the money he was given.

Do we know exactly what that budget includes, is it just players’ wages or are other things included like coaching staff pay and overnight stays? I ask as I’ve always found the figures given a bit ambiguous.

Exactly figures can be mislead when we don't know what each budget was spent on that year, nor can we be certain that elements of the clubs overall budget weren't moved around to maintain the appearance of a healthy playing budget each season

me too. i thought those were the 'football' budgets

However all things being equal you would imagine the wage budget would be the same % of those figures to allow meaningful comparisons.

This years budget covered all of the above, and things like medical fees as well. Likely similar for previous years as it was always called the first team budget rather than the wage bill.

The thing that puzzles me is when people claim it's a top 5/top 10/mid-table/ budget for the division. How do you know as the other teams don't publish theirs do they? They're under no obligation to either as I understand it.

Do we know what the budget was for 2020-21 then?

Definitely a case of guesswork based on the quality of their players and squad size, Keates or any manager would have more of an idea than most dealing with signing players from other teams and losing out to others when plenty of clubs keep pricing you out... and when you have picked up rejects (eg Reckord from Solihull) who may have taken a pay cut when signing it must be fairly easy to build a picture of who's throwing what about
