And if we sign our two new midfielders in January will anything really change?

No as it seems that's Parkinson's style. It's what Sunderland fans hated about him.

Yup.

He's not going to change his spots.

I’m starting to develop a theory:

- Higher up the leagues, defenders get faster, more technical and more “footballer”
- Less suited to aerial battles and big robust battles. Hence why they crumble under a repeated Tozer throw on to the 6 yard box. Same for repeated long balls. It’s the reason the likes of Stoke/Burnley have done well in the league.

The issue is in this league, that’s the bread and butter. It’s the ball playing sides (see our 98 point season) that’s going to tear this league a new one. Not sure Parky has that in the locker and it’s starting to worry me. When I saw the calibre of player we were signing I expected fast paced, on the ground (Notts County first half) where they just couldn’t live with us. Instead we are playing hoof ball, to two smaller, technically brilliant strikers 🥴

Our 98 point team had some ball players (fowler the most obvious), but we were the masters of the physical battle - beast, Pogba, wright, speight all used to bully the opposition physically, and creighton loved the diagonal.

Agree, this side isn't nasty enough

Tozer even mentioned in his interview that we have to be careful of being labelled as "too nice".

Most of that 98 point team could look after themselves

Didn’t say you don’t need the physical, but of those players, they could all also “play” football, and did. We have the budget for “that” sort of team again, big physical real footballers. I’m desperate for Parky to succeed, but initial signs are worrying me. You aren’t walking this league with Tozer throws and hoof ball. My hope is we just couldn’t complete on the midfield general in close season, and this isn’t “his” desired style of play, but a needs must.

Yes I did. As has been written repeatedly here before - it’s difficult for a defender to pass it to a none existent midfielder. And compared to previous approaches, I’d probably not class the way we play now as particularly long ball.
