Default Rory Smith - New York Times/Economic Times article

The NYT article is behind a paywall but is syndicated in the Economic Times of India: When Football Is Just a Storyline.

It raises some questions that I think we were all asking when the new owners came in, and puts the takeover in the wider context of the trend of football clubs being taken over or having people put on the board as part of documentaries (eg Peter Crouch at Dulwich Hamlet, Robbie Savage at Macclesfield, etc).

Personally I feel much more relaxed about the owners now than I did at the time, but I'd be interested to know how much other fans are still nervous about what happens in a couple of years once the initial documentary/novelty/news angle fades?

Rory Smith is also on the most recent episode of 'The Totally Football Show with James Richardson', and talks about the article towards the end of the episode (just after the 'odds with Paddy Power' sponsored section).

I've never been worried about the documentary. Lots of people (particularly fans of other clubs) seemed to be presuming that the Documentary was the reason R&R bought the club, but that doesn't make sense- if Rob McElhenney, creator of two hit shows, amd Holywood A lister Ryan Reynolds wanted to make a documentary then they wouldn't have to go to the trouble of buying a football club. Its part of the marketing campaign to grow awareness of the club, nothing more. I think some are going to be surprised at the impact of it financially and in bringing in new fans

Not sure I agree. The relative cost of buying us at £2m was small money and surely ,as owners, gave the documentary a whole new angle ?
In the end i careless though i do feel that Torquay was something of a circus. I voted in favour and still strongly believe that was right but in the end i simply want the best for Wrexham FC. We have had an inconsistent start but I for sure do not want to go back to build the budget and crowds hovering around 3000 in a stadium with no future plans.

Exactly, the figures that the owners have put in are small when you look at what has happened at Macclesfield. The club was bought for £500,000 and £4m spent on renovation of the stadium and squad. Having spoken to my brother who is a senior management accountant for media companies, previously looking after the BBC's world service, Itv content division as well at Bloomberg and Endemol Shine, he has assured me that that the £2m and costs of production will still turn the owners a very tidy profit.

"Buying us at £2m" This is what is being bounced around much of the media. I don't think the WST received a penny did they?

I agree that the Torquay game was as you put it a 'circus' as was the WST led town walkabout - but it attracted the media - and I suppose promoted the club.

As one wag put it to me - the whole week was rather Stephanie Booth ish. with funds -even down the the use of a national anthem.

Cmon The Town - another 5 for Cleeve on Saturday!

If I remember correctly it was a notional fee for the club and the £2m was to paid towards running the club. A gesture, if you will, a bit like the scene in the Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster where the band made a point of saying to the new bass player Rob Trujillo that they were giving him a $1m for joining the band. They painted as showing their commitment, could be seen as grandstanding.
Tbf the the PR generated by having the ownership we do must have made an exponential impact. Long may it continue

Agreed - the money was an investment as opposed to a purchase price along with 50,000 to "enhance the women’s football programme and increase participation at all levels”..

The WST led Walkabout?

It was Spencer. And it was for the documentary.
