Default Reserve team in the central league - playing @ Nantwich

Wrexham AFC are pleased to confirm that it will enter a Reserve team into The Central League for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign.

The League, which provides important development opportunities for young players as they seek to progress from youth football to the first-team environment, expanded to become a national competition in 2014, for the first time in its 103-year history.

Wrexham AFC manager, Phil Parkinson, said: “It was very important that we improved the games programme for our young professionals, and also those out of the team. Dave Jones will be running the team and we’ll play our home games at Nantwich, who we have a great relationship with.

“It’s a decision which was needed for the Club to progress. As everyone knows, last year we gave six of our young players professional contracts, but we have to look to improve them and give them every chance of bridging the gap to first-team football. This is a nice stepping stone to that.”

This season’s Central League fixtures begin in September and will be announced in due course.

Excellent news. Another important step to help make the club sustainable. Importing stars is both great and necessary, but to develop our own youth takes us back to the glory days of the 70s and emulates what Crewe did so well.

A better look at players like Angus/Dibble/RJH/Macca to see whether there’s a future for them at the club

That’s brilliant news, regular competitive football for all players who aren’t in the first team squad on any given match day, the chance for a reserves run out. Keeps them match fit and sharp, and rings on the young pros too.

Great to hear we are buddying up with the Dabbers again, such a friendly club, I know quite a few fans have developed a soft spot for them and look out for their results these days.

Awesome.

After taking a look at the 2021-22 season table this will provide a good test regularly against the reserves of Preston, Fleetwood, Bolton, Huddersfield, Walsall etc.

yep - quality opposition at a decent venue that some of us will hopefully be able to get along to watch - all good

Superb development...Easier said than done over last few years but well overdue...There was a reluctance to even look at youth or those not in first team...What the club needs to go forward
