Default The Rob and Ryan Era so far…

After talking on one of the spaces last night it got me thinking about times before the takeover… the Hamilton/Guterman/Moss/Dickens/Roberts of the world, all trying to shaft the club. Almost losing the ground and all the protesting, fund raising etc… that eventually saw the WST take control.

I won’t lie, I didn’t enjoy the WST years… we were always going to flatline in the NL or even lower just purely down to finances. Looking back I do think people had the right intentions even if I didn’t agree with many decisions they made. We were always going to have limited chances to get back where we belong without decent backing from investors.

During all those years we’d seen a wide range of players represent the club - some awful (e.g Simon Brown) some journeymen (Jefferson Louis) some gifted players that generally moved on quite quickly, and some cult hero’s (Glen Little springs to mind).

What we are seeing on the pitch now, I could never contemplate in my wildest dreams a few years ago. We’ve got quality in every position - flair, skill and multiple players that get people out of their seats on a match day. There were 7800 watching us play Port Vale in an EFL Trophy game with very little riding on it. We couldn’t attract half that for league games before Covid hit! The town is buzzing every match day in anticipation of another Wrexham win at the Racecourse!

Yesterdays performance really stood out for me and made me think about just how far we’ve progressed. It’s just astonishing. Instead of complaining we are doomed to regional football, the biggest moan now is pricetags on clothing aimed at our worldwide fans!

Apologies for the new thread and long winded essay but I still have to pinch myself when I step into the ground and see it filled to the rafters every week. Long may it continue!!!!

Basically agree with everything you've said. I pinch myself everyday and I'm still in awe at our players and our support.

Some people just want to be on the right side of history and I think just can't get their heads around how fantastic things are at the moment and just expect things to blow up.

We're still relatively early in our journey which will end up in relegations and going out of cups early and bad transfer business but that's part of football. I really think we need to enjoy being good again for a few years since on the pitch it's broadly been crap for 20 years!

Indeed, this is a great time to be a Wrexham fan.
For those not fortunate enough to be around to follow Wrexham during the glory years (which in my book started in 1969 and went on to the early 80s), what we're seeing now is very similar: The crowds, buzz around town, expectation of a win, exciting games, expectation of cup runs and giant killing.
What is different, and I think better, is the international appeal and the media buzz. Of course, I would say that because it allows me to be part of what's going on even though I'm now 3,000 miles away.
Wrexham used to get a few mentions on TV for our plucky giant killing exploits, and even once made it to a comedy segment on Monty Python, but what we're getting now is just surrealistic and almost unimaginable.
Better still, it's a much more rounded story. The few glimpses used to be the Football Club, now it's the town, community and wider area which are almost always presented in a positive light. That, in of itself, is amazing and wonderful to experience!

We have been both very unlucky (98 point season in particular) and very lucky (Rob and Ryan).

However, if we had been promoted to League Two or sold to an earlier investor, I don’t think we’d have been given this opportunity. I don’t see you have Rob and Ryan without the WST and situation we ended in.

Fully agree. These are magic times that take me back to the 70’s. The inevitability of yesterday’s victory underlines how far we have come. Just hoping the managerial merry go round never lures PP away as he, for me, is pivotal.

Barring an ambitious championship coming in for him I can't see it

Highly doubt PP leaves simply due to security and a free reign to buy who he needs, almost. Wealthy hands off owners with patience. I do not see anyone leaving that soon, especially since he may well be in the Championship in a near enough future.

Has been fantastic, without them we were going nowhere, and if they left tomorrow the effect they have had on the club and the town is phenomenal ;-)

Excellent post , all true

Only down side for me is that there were so many faithful who endured our bad times and are not here with us, and when you have lost someone so close to you, you wish they could share in these great times with you.
