I did warn you in preseason. The refs in L2 are no better than the NL. We had a really poor one today too.

The ref was poor but Accrington played the perfect game for a ref that wasn’t going to get his cards out or give any minor fouls. They were overly aggressive and won the ball from us about a half a dozen times when they’d gone through our player.

The stats show they committed 20 fouls but only 1 yellow given. We must have realised what the ref was like in the second half as Jones and Lee both deserved bookings for late challenges but nothing given.

I wouldn’t be too disappointed with the result, it was an even game and we didn’t take our chances.

Their players played him all game, very streetwise team. Reminded me of a Crawley, Bromley, Borehamwood type team where they are just horrible and break the game up at every turn. The ball was never in play after they scored their first goal, it was like watching Atletico Madrid.

It was a poor performance but some people’s reaction is embarrassing. For anyone who watched it there was no opportunity to put together a performance after the pen as you say, the ball was never in play, through a mix of time wasting and them throwing themselves on the ground.

I still cannot fathom the penalty, was 100% a case of ref wanting a “moment”.

The penalty was a joke. You very rarely see them given for those grapples between attackers and defenders from a corner - if he’s giving that, then there should be a penalty given from every other corner in the game as they are all no different.

What the people who lauded the referee quality in this league failed to realise that the refs rise through the leagues, so the majority of refs at this level will have reffed us before at National League level - especially since very few people want to grow up being a referee so the pool to choose from is very shallow.

Yes and no. Obviously there's always been bad refs but it feels like today anyone gets fined for even saying a referee had a bad game. I get that it's a thankless job and people can take it too far but the pendulum often swings too far in the other direction when it comes to reaction to criticising a ref's performance from the FA.

I've started feeling that way too.
