Question What do we still need to seal the deal?

I was listening to the last FiD podcast with Morrell (recorded pre Accrington) and I felt that the lads were getting a bit giddy and carried away, talking as if it was pretty much plain sailing from now on.

I think the Accrington game showed clearly that this is not the case, and there is no room for complacency if we want to get another promotion

Previously the answer to this question was always “midfield” but we have now largely resolved this area. However, this has served to highlight other areas that still need to be strengthened for me.

These are, in my opinion:

Central defence - some of our defenders are too injury prone, Tozer isn’t getting any younger and Boyle is a clogger.

Strikers - Mullin was always our star player. The podcast above showed that this is no longer the case, with all of them agreeing that Lee is now our standout player and no one else is close. Truth is he’s not the same player since his injury and likely won’t ever be. Palmer is decent but isn’t prolific and Dalby is not quite at the level (maybe still room for improvement though). Fletcher is an impact sub, if he can get fit again (not a given at his age)

Anyone want to differ from the above?

Mullin and Lee are both our standout players.

But CF and CB are areas we should definitely look to improve.

Always feel we need pacey wingers who can go past players. E.g. Carlos and gigs type players.

Pace, pace, pace and a little less gamesmanship and more gameplay from Mullin away from home.

We don't play with wingers though.

As long as Parky is leading us it will be 3-5-2 and more CBs or WBs in the building.

We have Barnett - pacey and puts in excellent crosses....and Mendy/McClean as well.

A midfielder who can pass a ball.

The midfield is workman like, by design, but not much quality on the ball there. Teams have worked this out. Sutton shut down our wings by doubling up on our wing backs, allowed the midfield to have and we struggled massively against a poor side.

We’ve only got 1 midfielder who’s got more than 1 assist all season, Lee with 2.

We need more strings to our bow.

My advice. Take podcast’s with a pinch of salt. Form the basis of an opinion on what you see. I'm pretty sure the same podcast once seriously questioned PP.

We lost a game of football, pound to a bag of shit we'll lose another one. Relax. We'll be fine.

I've not seen much of you apart from the one game and some highlights but based on our experiences, I'd say the key is signing versatile players that allow you to change systems during the game and find different ways to win. It will also stand you in good stead for L1. A Leyton Orient fan who posts on our messageboard said the biggest difference up there is that managers react quickly changing formations and tactics during the game.

We were overly reliant on one way of playing last season which was our undoing when we suffered injuries to the key components. Even if you're going well now, the final third of the season is very different for the form teams. It's only November now so the lower teams are more likely to have a go but later in the season you'll play against teams who are happy to play for a draw and they're very good at it. We've signed pace and ball carriers (Olaofe, Barry and Bailey) who can find their way through teams who sit in very deep but still have Wootton who we can go long to and use for his brilliant hold up play. I think we'll be looking to add more ball carriers in January particularly as it's unlikely we'll have Barry next season.

With my limited knowledge of your team, I'd say you need more pace throughout the team and some tricky ball carriers.
