I must admit I was surprised there wasn't even a basic pat down when I entered the stadium that is usually a routine safety feature at most matches.
Once on the terrace there was loads of private security guys but they didn't seem to be doing much apart from trying to encourage fans to move back .The terrace soon filled up and there wasn't much moving space about and I didn't feel the terrace could cope with any sort of emergency with so many fans packed in it. Especially as you wouldn't be able to get on the pitch because of barriers.
I must admit I didn't see any police until I was leaving the ground

The remit of the stewards and security is mostly to observe and challenge verbally. They have no powers of arrest and can only intervene physically if its absolutely necessary and proportionate. They know this would be suicide if they did and it would be chaos. No disrespect to them, they've trained for a job and they do it but they're just for show. They know it and we know it.

And I should add, they're there to help fans and 9 times out of 10 they do so.

The ones I saw at Accrington must have been imaginary then.

Most of the stewards I've ever interacted with have been nothing but pleasant, home and away. But as you rightly say there's always some jobsworth stewards out there that just make everything worse

I saw an incident at crewe away dealt with relatively swiftly and smoothly that involved security and stewards working together. All was well until the, I assume, shift manager came over heavy handed and spiled a otherwise commendable operation.
Then at Mansfield in the cup, it actually took one of our own fans to escorts a fan from the stands which should have been done far earlier by the 3 police officers in front of him. It was done quickly and appropriately.
It's a funny old game.

Not inside in an operational way.
