Wrexham vs Huddersfield Town- July 13th, 7.45pm K.O

Finally- a return to football at the Racecourse Ground. Granted it may only be a slightly over priced pre-season friendlies, but who can say that its not at least interesting to see the new signings? Certainly not me anyway. With Danny Wright, Chris Westwood and Jake Speight all making their debut, it will be worth coming a long to check what these players are about. However, if other pre-season starlets are anything to go by *cough Taboubi cough*, it’s not worth judging the new lads based on what is essentially a glorified training session.

Still, it’s always worth going to these games, I actually quite like the chilled atmosphere and getting a chance to see the players in a more relaxed environment. A player can only really be fully judged in the setting of a competitive game, of course, but it also gives the team a chance to try out new things without the pressure of a mistake costing points. It’ll also be good to put the disappointment of the end of last season behind us get started on the new season.

Our last game against Huddersfield was a 1-0 defeat in the 04/05 season, the game being the last of the season and ultimately our last game in League 1. 7,151 fans witnessed David Mirfin score the only goal in the game. With the games in recent years being few and far between, it’ll be nice to see a fairly local side show up with a few fans (both home and away) for our first game in 6 years, and it’d be even nicer to get a win for a bit of revenge for that horrid day.

Prediction and Attendance

Friendlies are almost impossible to judge with the way both sides will chop and change system and players during the 90 minutes. It should be a fairly attacking game, so we could see some goals from both sides. That being said I’ve probably just jinxed it and we will see a boring 0-0 or 1-1 affair. The all stands except for the Mold Road Stand are closed (with prices at £10 Adult, £5 Concession and £2 Junior), leaving us with a maximum capacity of roughly 1,500. Dependant on the weather I’d say we might see around 1,000 – 1,300 turn up.

Team News

Wrexham will no doubt give starts to Wright, Westwood and Speight as well as possibly starting trialist Glen Little. Huddersfield will also probably give starts to their new signings Liam Cooper, Tommy Miller and Oscar Gobern.

 Expected Wrexham XI

(complete guess work but I’d imagine we will swap around at half time, hence why I’ve mentioned multiple players for some positions)

Obeng/Walker —– Westwood/Andrews ————- Creighton/Sinclair —– Ashton/Hunt

Keates ——————— Harris

Morrell/NKP ————————————————— Speight/Little

Pre-Match Poll Results – Which player are you looking forward to see? (taken from 11/07)

Jake Speight 35 67.31%
Danny Wright 13 25.00%
Chris Westwood 4 7.69%

As can be seen, the vast majority of fans cant wait to see Jake Speight in action. Personally I’m looking forward to seeing Chris Westwood, don’t know a lot about him as a player and I do love a good defender. Let’s hope all three can put in a good performance tomorrow, Come On You Reds!
